LG 42LW650S review: The Offenherzige

The LG 42LW650S caused a sensation in the first test in May 2011: a stylish 3D TV with brand-new polarization technology. The Koreans had even developed a new panel, because the technology is very demanding in production.

Our balance

With the software of the LG 42LW650S it harbored however still. Several software versions later (3.06.06 to 3.07.08) has changed a lot. Reason enough for us to send the TV again over the test course.

Successful picture

Of course, LG has not changed anything about the hardware: 3D technology, 200 Hertz TruMotion (100 hertz technology with 100 hertz backlight blinking) and ample connections.

Smart retrofitting

The innovations refer primarily to the Smart TV function of the LG 42LW650S. The promised browser is now on board. It works quite fast and brings for a complex web site also a real mouse pointer, which can be controlled by the cursor cross of the remote control or via the touchscreen of a smartphone.

Also in the app gallery and the premium services has the LG 42LW650S properly added. As a further online video store, besides viewpoints, Viewster has also been added.

However, LG did not realize all the projects. The recording function and HbbTV are not yet. Everything is the same with the operation: The huge home menu of the LG 42LW650S is beautifully designed with the many colorful pictures, but could overburden some contemporaries.

HDMI-CEC now also works with the PlayStation 3 in this generation, but refused to work with the technoTrend S 835 HD + compatible HD-Plus receiver from other manufacturers.

The LG 42LW650S offered a good image performance. In the 3D image, he liked to speak from one eye to the other with a low level of speech. For Blu-ray players, the image enhancement circuit "TruMotion" provided "high" for cloudy patterns and should therefore be adjusted or switched off finer. The black level was at top level.

If you are looking at photos with DLNA media services using the Smart TV services like apps, Internet surfing, via USB, but still have a TV without network functions, this can be helped with the ST600 from LG: the small, 130 Euro-expensive box is simply plugged into the network or entered into the WLAN and supplies an HDMI-connected TV with these multimedia contents.

In this case, the box accesses the same services as an LG television, be it the App Gallery or premium portals. Access to the online video store Maxdome is so easy to retrofit. Operation is carried out using the supplied encoder.
