The human body is a living sculpture – a work of art, “says Christian Martin Weiss, explaining,” he sometimes tells more about his inhabitants, soul and spirit than he is aware of. It is not just a container but a language and an instrument. “For the nude photographer, the human body is as much a part of the human face as the human face.
Equipment
The equipment is second only to him during photography. He also likes to work with expensive studios such as with ambient light at ISO 3000 and aperture 1.4. But he admits: "The low noise of a full-format SLR has freed my style from technical limits and gave me even more freedom from improvisation."
Motivational Search
His motifs are in different ways. Sometimes concrete pictorial ideas form the basis or the inspiration comes from any profane source. He then plays the wonted idea in his head. "It helps to visualize the lighting and props," he explains.
Shooting preparation
It can also be an advantage to sketch ideas because they are so fast to lose, and a sketch is a good memory aid and helps to plan the scene. A procedure that is also recommended when a photographer is not yet practiced in the production process and may forget details.
Recording technique
All the preliminary work does not mean that a shoot can not be completely different than planned, for example because the weather does not play, the model is ill and the replacement does not fit into the costume.
For nude photographer Christian no problem, it can be just as inspiring for him to develop his ideas at the shooting. He estimates: "Often, my creativity is only going to be on top of the chosen backdrop on high rides. One thing is the next, and the result itself amazes me in the end."
While working, almost everything reminds him of something from the history of art or film, and he likes to play with these idols. Generally speaking, anyone who dare to quote works should not be stuck on a subject, otherwise the recording can quickly become a cheap copy.
In addition to the composition of the picture, light and color are the most important elements in order to achieve a strong image effect. But without an interesting motif and a certain visual or conceptual concept, nothing exciting is created with exciting light. Everything has to be harmonious and mutually reinforcing.
For example, cold and warm light sources such as artificial light and daylight can be combined to create a harmonious mixed light in a recording. A dramatic character can give the images very large or indirect light sources together with very hard accent lighting. "These details have to be exactly right on the set during the recording, they can not be saved in the post-production," says Aktfotograf Weiss.
Christian Weiss is not about beauty, but about intensity. He wants to merge pose and light into a dense atmosphere in a single emotional act or emotional actress.
He does not serve beauty stereotypes very hard, and despite all the quotes - from the history of art, for example - he leaves the picture open. He summarized: "My recordings offer many readings - pain, pride, lack of protection, strength, dignity, or pleasure." The interpretation is left to the viewing habits and the perception of the viewer, his identification is closely linked to his experience. "
For Christian, the end result is that his image carries a strong emotion, but it should cause fascination and a certain unrest in the viewer.
He does not have a shooting idol, even though there are quite a few photographic works, indeed works that impress him. Much of what he currently values is moving around the border between art and fashion photography, including Eugenio Recuenco, Tim Walker, Annie Leibovitz, and Erwin Olaf. Otherwise, he loves classics like Walker Evans, Bill Brandt, Edward Weston, Josef Sudek, and Jan Saudek.
Image expression
When working with light, however, he inspires films more than photographs. He also has not only current models - for him, everything can be inspiration in the visual arts, but he has a great weakness for classical painting and sculpture. This is how photography is transformed into a picture by the image processing.
By means of digital image processing, Christian Weiss may change hair tones and add details to strengthen the image. Like at an analogue time in the laboratory, a subtle light region for the purpose of darkening or lightening individual areas is also very important on the PC.
Role models
For Christian it is clear: "Brightness directs the eye even more than composition and color." He would like to have as much information as possible in the picture, but direct the view through the light to the picture-important elements. "This allows a picture to be captured quickly and at the same time, the eye and the imagination have the opportunity to walk a little longer over the barely recognizable places," he explains.
But ultimately everything depends on the desired result. If a recording is to present a moment as unadulterated as possible, Christian Weiss will treat the output file very gently and will hardly change anything except for small skin retouches and color corrections.
If, on the other hand, a staging is required, the picture can also be painted over in extreme cases or the background can be mounted. Because Christian Weiss is always bored with the ever-changing images, he likes to experiment with the various methods, but he heals all the means.
