Whatsapp: Blue Hook Around - How It Works

Who would have thought that two small build hooks in Whatsapp could provide so much attention. After the initial discussions about the new “read” status of the messenger have been restored, it is helpful to know the tricks that can be used to circumvent the read acknowledgment.

Trick 1: Read only notifications

Currently, there are three feasible ways to work around the blue hooks:

Trick 2: Use the widget (Android only)

Whether you use Whatsapp as an app for iOS, Android or Windows Phone, each mobile operating system has a notification feature, often with a display on the screen. If you have not configured your device differently, new messenger messages will be displayed there. Here you can read the last Whatsapp message without the blue hooks revealing you.

Trick 3: Switch to flight mode

If you're using an Android smartphone, you can also display unread Whatsapp messages in a convenient and clear way through the Whatsapp widget. The messages are unedited and displayed with emoticons - only photos and audio messages are not displayed. Only when the displayed messages are opened does the caller receive a read receipt.

For most smartphone manufacturers, you can add a widget by touching the start screen in a free space with a finger for a long time and then tap the "Add widget" option. You can then select the Whatsapp widget from a list and drag-and-drop it.

In the case of longer messages or longer conversations the trick with the notifications helps of course not. However, there is still the possibility to switch the smartphone or tablet to the flight mode, in order to read the received Whatsapp messages in peace. Only when you deactivate the flight mode, your chat partner sees the blue hooks in the display.

Smartwatch owners can often receive Whatsapp messages on your watch. This is handled by Whatsapp as the notification function, with the difference that depending on the model, longer messages can be displayed and several messages can be read. In the test with a Pebble Smartwatch and the Android app "Notification Center for Pebble", it was so easy to read messages and not to cause blue hooks.

If these tricks are too cumbersome, you can either hope that Whatsapp will add a corresponding privacy setting to hide the read status, or look for alternatives. Otherwise, you simply have to be there when the answer takes a little longer.
