The cordless mobile phone of Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel has been intercepted by American intelligence agencies, as Spiegel Online reports. In response to Merkel’s direct demand yesterday, US President Barack Obama assured her that her communications are not currently under surveillance by US intelligence agencies. Whether this was the case earlier, Obama left open. The federal government sees such interceptions as a serious breach of trust, which should be immediately stopped.
Also interesting is
The surveillance scandal is currently causing massive disagreements between the federal government and the US government. It fits well into the picture of the comprehensive espionage activities of the US secret service NSA in the United States, which had revealed Edward Snowden a few months ago. The fact that even the mobile phone of the Federal Chancellor, which is regarded as a special listening device, should be monitored, does not throw a good light on the security of the high-security telephone known as Merkel-Phones and the capabilities of the American intelligence services.
