The HD-FOX is a simple entry-level receiver, which sets the stage for digital television – whether it is normal or high-definition. The scaler converts 576 or 720 picture lines to the desired output format, whether 576p, 720p or 1080i. Even TV in standard resolution has a smoother effect, more homogeneous and MPEG artefacts are less noticeable.

Its equipment corresponds to the class average. In addition to the indispensable HD outputs HDMI and YUV, it brings the classic video jacks with: two scart and one RCA video output. With the two implanted data interfaces, USB and network, it is currently not far. The Ethernet jack is used for future use. Nevertheless, the USB socket works somewhat better: Through it, the user can at least read or save program lists. Playing MP3 or Photos does not work.
The exploration of the front of the HD-FOX is done quickly: CI slot and card slot, four buttons and an alphanumeric display. For this the developers the screen menu succeeded the more schmucker. With clear pictograms it performs through the functions of the satellite receiver. At the touch of a button, the user can view HD stations separately or switch to favorite lists.
The EPG gives an overview of the currently running programs and allows you to search for genres or keywords in the database. The simple but clear remote control corresponds well with the on-screen menu
In the tintest the Humax did not give any nakedness. He played both analogue via RCA and digital via his optical output clearly and naturally. In the picture there was hardly anything to complain about. First, the testers tested the SD playback. Here, it is mainly a good output signal. With blurred and badly resolved signals the scaler did not get along so well. So he showed fine lines at a distance of a few lines when he was set to 1080i as the output signal. There were no problems, however, in high-speed movies, which were aired with high data rates. But Caution: Even if the Humax writes a 576-line television picture with 1080i on a FullHD television, the picture is not sharper. It is more precise and quiet.
But still disappear from the scartbuchse well-known image errors: noise, translating in the form of fine wave patterns or the wobern in strong red surfaces, if one the receiver by YUV or HDMI to the television docking. In the case of HD stations, the quality is ultimately almost exclusively dependent on the picture signal. Here, the HD-FOX had a harmonious, if not with the sharpest performance.
The HD-FOX offers a solid entry into the world of high-definition television. If he wants to learn more data functions, such as photos, play MP3 or even TV, he will even get a bargain afterwards.
