Purchase advice: Notebook, Convertible or Tablet

In this article, you’ll find out if you’re more likely to have a notebook or a convertible for the tasks you have to cope with, or whether you’re probably best served with a tablet.

Notebook: the working animal

Folding the screen up can work, but the screen and keyboard can not be separated - this is the domain of the convertibles. You may have heard of the term "Ultrabook". This is a trademark of Intel for ultra-thin and light notebooks based on Intel processors that meet specific performance, runtime, and dimensions requirements. In general, an Ultrabook is a thin notebook with Intel hardware.

What to look for

Many devices are available with additional graphics cards from AMD or Nvidia, which should be recommended to users who want to play with their notebooks. Depending on the display size, the more powerful devices are also suitable for work such as image processing or film editing, but you should also pay attention to fast hardware and a fast graphics chip.

Convertible: All purpose weapon

Although there are many notebooks with a touch screen, the gesture on the display seems to be more cumbersome for most users than with the conventional touchpad or mouse, if the notebook is normal on the desk in front of the user. It is important to remember that you have to lift the whole arm and move your fingers on the screen for every control gesture.

What to look for

Features such as fast connections (at least one USB 3.0 port should be available, better two or three), a high-quality, ideally lit keyboard, enough memory of four, better eight GB, a bright, evenly lit display, A good battery life and a fast, up-to-date processor. Do not save money here, but invest in a slightly better device than planned, because a later retrofit of notebooks is hardly possible and the software becomes more and more demanding.

A Convertible unites the world of the tablet with that of a notebook and accommodates two devices in one housing. Depending on the model, the keyboard can be folded or removed completely so that the display can be used in both cases as an ordinary tablet with touch. The folding mechanism differs from device to device. Once the display is turned 180 degrees by means of a pivot-tilt hinged hinge, it folds to the back of the display, and the user folds it backwards without a longitudinal rotation.

Advantage of the first method: The keyboard is not placed downwards open on the bottom of the display, but is under the up-facing display.

Advantage of the second method: A mechanism in which the hinge has only been folded in one direction and does not have to be turned completely is much more durable. This applies to the hinge and especially to the cables installed in it. For a few models, the keyboard is pushed under the display.

Before you buy, you should consider exactly which principle appears most useful and durable. If you use the display as a tablet in more than half of the cases, you probably have the best solution with a device with which the display and keyboard can be completely detached. In the case of convertibles, however, the same rules apply as for notebooks, since a convertible can also be used very well as a work tool, depending on fast hardware.

However, the display size is limited, at the moment is at 13.3-inch diagonal. This makes the Convertible a mobile workstation rather than a permanent desktop replacement.

Great advantage of a convertible: it can be placed on the table almost like a middle game, so it can be used for presentations in a small frame.

If you're looking for a device to work, it's no better to take a pure tablet. With the embedded keyboard of a tablet you can write mails or passwords, but if you want to write longer texts, you need a correct keyboard. And this can be operated, for example, by Bluetooth, but you would have to have an external keyboard always on the way and that is annoying. The tablet's domains are more likely to be on the Internet or the use of various apps, but not the office workload.

If you are using an iPhone and are satisfied with it, you can rest assured an iPad because it does not have to be a new operating system and can install and use paid apps on its iPad at no extra cost. The Apple hardware is high-quality and mature, the operation is easy for learners to learn. Counter-argument: iPads are comparatively expensive.

Tablet: Just for fun

For much less money are already Android tablets to have, especially if one is content with simpler devices and dispensed with high-resolution displays. While the lowest-priced iPad with 9.7-inch display currently needs to make 379 euros, a 10-inch Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga Tablet is available for less than half.

However, neither Android devices nor iOS devices can be connected to USB printers. If you want to print with Android devices, you can do this via Google's Cloud Print or with Print Apps from the printer manufacturers.

What to look for

Here, as with a Windows computer, you can connect a printer via USB and get started. Windows 8 is, however, very resource-hungry, so the devices need fast hardware and a lot of storage space and the battery life is often not long for the same reasons.
