On the right path

With Mozilla Lightning the free email client Thunderbird can be extended by a task and appointment management. Thunderbird is thus a full-fledged Outlook replacement. Lightning 1.0 Beta 5 is the current, stable version for Thunderbird 5 and 6 and replaces Mozilla Sunbird, a stand-alone appointment management that is no longer developed.

Lightning practically leaves nothing to be desired about the range of functions. Calendars can be stored locally or integrated in various ways over the network, for example via CalDAV or FTP servers. And even synchronization with Google Calendar is possible, but only after installing the free add-on Provider for Google Calendar.

CONCLUSIONS: Google Calendar like Mozilla Lightning provide all the important features to manage appointments and tasks comfortably. A dual use is suitable for users who already use Thunderbird as their e-mail client.

Category: Email ClientCloud: Gmail, http://mail.google.com Freeware: Mozilla Thunderbird, www.mozilla.org/en/thunderbird

Do you still need an e-mail client nowadays? Or is it not much easier to read and answer the daily mail in the browser? An advantage of Gmail and other Webmailers is that you can edit mail regardless of your current location - even with mobile devices like smartphones or tablet PCs.

Naturally, the download of the e-mails from the server to the PC is no longer required, and there is an unlimited amount of space available. All messages are archived at Gmail for all times. However, while it is impossible to use any external accounts with Gmail, Mozilla Thunderbird manages mail accounts of all types. Thunderbird also does not provide multiple mail signatures, different sender IDs, and other extras - Gmail.

CONCLUSIONS: If you only have a Google Mail account, you do not need a local email client. For professional work with multiple accounts, Mozilla Thunderbird is preferable to the Web.

Category: Financial ManagementCloud: Kontoblick, www.kontoblick.de Freeware: Aquamarine Household Book, www.aquamarin.org

Kontoblick makes a household book online, integrates accounts with different banks and provides clear graphical evaluations. The HBCI procedure is intended to ensure the security of the account statements. It is also used by the aquamarine household book. Both solutions also support the CSV format. Payment procedures are not possible with either application.

CONCLUSION: Kontoblick looks a bit more modern than Aquamarine's book.

ITunes is an administrative software for music with integrated online store, while LastFM stream music streams. Both are convenient solutions for enjoying music digitally. Anyone looking for occasional entertainment can have a lot of fun with LastFM. If you want to listen to the same favorite songs again and again, take iTunes.

CONCLUSION: LastFM and iTunes are good and complement each other excellently.
