LAME: Download Download

The open-source MP3 encoder LAME is used to create MP3 audio files. Originally, the MP3 format was developed by the Frauenhofer Institute, which offers the corresponding encoder exclusively for a license. Developers of free and open source applications distribute their audio software either from the outset without MP3 encoders or immediately access the free alternative LAME. The MP3 encoder alternative has existed since 1998 and has been continuously developed since then by a growing team. Today LAME has established itself as a standard in the open-source scene. If you want to use LAME to convert audio files to MP3 format, you must integrate the encoder into the respective software, usually a conversion program such as EAC (Exact Audio Copy), Audiograbber or CDex. Normally you can do this via the settings menu of the respective software. In some cases, it is also sufficient to copy the unpacked LAME files to the program directory. You can find out exactly how this works in detail in the software’s help or on the manufacturer’s website. For further information on the use and integration of LAME, please visit http://lame.sourceforge.net/using.php. Alternatively, you can use the graphic front-end LamedropxPd to quickly convert audio files to MP3 format.
