Android for x86 processors

During a press conference on sales for the first quarter of 2011, Otellini told reporters and analysts: “We have received the source code for Gingerbread from Google and are working on this version.” Intel will release notebooks with Intel x86 processors and Android as operating system, along with some manufacturers.

Otellini expects corresponding devices from several manufacturers later this year. To smartphones with Intel logo on the housing it was said, one would be disappointed, these should not be on the market within a year.

After the recent presentation of Oak Trail, an Atom CPU for tablets, at IDF 2011, according to Otellini, Intel will be able to offer tablets for Windows, Android and Meego this year. Asus has recently announced that it is working alongside the Android tablets EeePad Transformer and EeePad Slider on an Oak Trail Tablet.

The smartphone market, on the other hand, is still firmly in the hands of the ARM platform. As Intel sees great growth potential here, the Medfield chipset is expected to jump into the breach in the third quarter, according to Intel, with some sizes already being designed in the smartphone market.
