The Ricoh Theta is basically composed of two back-to-back optical systems with 180 ° angle and one image sensor, which can capture a complete scene in 360 ° horizontally and 180 ° vertically, ie all directions around the camera in a single shot . For this purpose, the two half-panoramas are internally combined into a ball-photo. Ricoh did not (yet) provide information on light intensity, sensor resolution and file size. The photos can be transferred via USB or WLAN to a PC or mobile device. There they can be viewed through a free viewer app, unfortunately not as a live view image, but only after the recording. The viewer can zoom in and out, rotate as well as the size, shape, and composition of the image. Interactive sample photos can be viewed on their own website. If a recording is uploaded to theta360.com, it can be published via social networks like Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr or Microsoft Photosynth
Ricoh Theta is currently compatible with the iPhone 4S as well as iPhone 5 from iOS version 6.0 and is supported by the free app "Ricoh Theta for iPhone" from the AppStore. With the app not only the pictures can be viewed, but also the theta WLAN can be remote controlled. This is handy if the photographer does not want to appear in the 360 ° photo, as it is inevitably the case when one triggers with the camera in the hand. Even before the end of the year, theta will also be compatible with Android devices. The computer software is available for Mac OSX and Windows. The firmware of the Ricoh Theta can be updated in the future.
