TeslaCrypt decrypted: blackmailer release master key

ESET has released a TeslaCrypt Decryptor Tool, which decrypts infected files with the master key.

Where is the meaning of the meaning?

The blackmail Trojan TeslaCrypt encrypted files with endings like .xxx, .ttt, .micro or.mp3 on infected PCs. Only after a ransom payment of 500 US Dollar in Bitcoin could victims free their data again. However, there is now good news for all concerned: the master key of TeslaCrypt (v3 or v4) has been released and the encryption of the Ransomware can now be removed free of charge.

The Surprising: The master key was released by the TeslaCrypt extortionists themselves - including an apology. As the security expert, Lawrence Abrams, on his website bleepingcomputer.com, the criminals replaced the Darknet website, which was set up to pay the ransom, by a text message. It says: "Project closed [...] we are sorry!". To do this, the master key for TeslaCrypt is specified, asking you to wait until a decryption tool is developed.

And in fact, the right tools were not long in coming. For example, ESET antivirus experts have released a decrypter as a free download that restores infected files

How to use the tool, ESET explains in a tutorial on the TeslaCrypt Decrypter.

The question is, why the extortionists TeslaCrypt now give up: Were they extirpated themselves or can they already with the taken ransom to rest?

For users, however, the security situation is not affected by the end of TeslaCrypt. A blackmail Trojan will be replaced by a lot more - so be careful. To keep up-to-date, we recommend our weekly "PC Magazin Sicherheitradar" with up-to-date security news
