Windows 10 KB3189866: Download via Windows Update makes problems

Some users report problems with Windows 10 after Patch Day in September. The cumulative update KB3189866 may hang when you download it.

Error still unclear

The end is often achieved at percentages of around half or just before the end. Then the update process will hang, a restart of Windows Update does not fix the problem in most cases, as different media and users report in forums.

Fortunately, however, a workaround is available, which allows users to successfully install the update. The detour is via the Windows Update Catalog. You must open this link with Internet Explorer.

Alternatively, depending on the Windows version, you can also call up direct download links, the other one has the website techdows.com published. There are versions for both versions of Windows 10 (32- and 64-bit). They are intended for both the Home and Pro versions.

As we reported, Microsoft has been providing the latest September patches for Windows, Office & Co. since the mornings of the past Tuesday. The total of twelve security bulletins contain half critical downloads that block dangerous security gaps. The download and installation is strongly recommended. Cybercriminals can access and take over a system through gaps in Internet Explorer, Edge, Windows, Office, Silverlight, or Flash.

It is unknown what caused the problems with the update for Windows 10. Likewise, we can not say how many of the downloading difficulties are affected. Microsoft has not said so far.

Information is usually found promptly on the support web pages for Windows. However, the entry for KB3189866 does not show any current details at lunch time. Users get a temporary solution. It remains to be seen when Microsoft fixes the bug.
