Surface Pro in the test: First opinions on the tablet with Windows 8 Pro

The first tests are available online to the Surface Pro, and opinions differ widely. The tablet from Microsoft is expected with voltage: It comes with full-fledged Windows 8 Pro and classic PC hardware. It was already apparent that the battery with an Intel Core i5 processor with four cores probably will not last long. The testers agree on this point. According to “The Verge”, the battery time is about four hours.

By the way, this is one hour below the minimum requirements for ultrabooks (at least five, better than seven hours), which Intel has set. The design of the Surface Pro according to various testers is fundamentally similar to that of the Surface RT. The Surface Pro, however, feels a bit choppier and is much heavier. For Walt Mossberg of the "Wall Street Journal" this means: too hard for a tablet, but a laptop lightweight. The price of up to 1,000 euros for the 128GB version is also a point of criticism: simply too expensive.

David Pierce of "The Verge" asks, for whom the Surface Pro is to be created. As a compromise between laptop and tablet, the Surface Pro does not meet any product class. It is intended to give the user more freedom, instead, the Microsoft tablet feels restrictive. The 16: 9 resolution also makes the tablet unsuited: the device is too big, clunky and too dependent on the power supply.

John Biggs of "TechCrunch", on the other hand, believes that the Surface Pro proves that the PC will resume competition with tablets. After "decades" with different OEM waste as well as device designs like "from the back room of a shabby business for office supplies", the Surface Pro is a good thing. It is so good that it could bring Windows 8 clearly forward. According to TechCrunch, the Surface Pro is at least the right hardware for this.

Anand Lal Shimpi from "AnandTech" rated the Microsoft device as a more positive than "TechCrunch". The Surface Pro is the first tablet with enough potential to replace a tablet, a notebook or a PC in its entirety: if the user wants it. There is no compromise, no new app world or anything. The only blemish is the price. According to the above author, the Surface Pro is only useful if you are willing to spend another 120 to 130 US Dollars for the input accessories touch cover or type cover

The majority of the previous testers, however, sees a rather moderate compromise between tablet and classic computer in the Surface Pro. It is bigger and bulky than ordinary tablets and the battery life is not competitive. As a laptop replacement, the screen was too small and there was no reasonable mouse control. The Surface Pro is only interesting for a minority who wants to spend up to 1,000 US dollars or Euro (Microsoft assumes the amounts probably 1: 1) for a potent computing machine in a comparatively compact housing to laptops. The Surface Pro will be released on February 9, 2013 in the USA. The American date has not yet been fixed.
