Why reinvent the wheel when it’s going well? The EOS 20D is actually a self-running digital SLR camera – solid enough to appeal to professionals, compact and comparatively inexpensive, which meets ambitious hobby photographers. Nevertheless, the development during the previous market run of the EOS 20D has not stopped, which can be easily seen on the small 1.8-inch monitor: the current gage size for DSLRs is 2.5 inches, which is not only for the competition, But also for current sister models from Canon. The answer to the resulting need for action is now on the market and is called EOS 30D. However, the new features do not offer more resolution than the predecessor: the CMOS in the APS format with an image angle factor of 1.6 comes as usual with 8.2 megapixels. This corresponds to the test results: The advantage of the 30D in the overall evaluation is marginal with a half point.
Looking at the back of the EOS 30D makes it clear that the camera is technically up-to-date. The 2.5 inch diagonal TFT monitor offers a resolution of 230,000 pixels and a viewing angle of 170 degrees (horizontal / vertical), as is already known from the full-size DSLR models EOS 5D and 1Ds Mark II. The enlarged viewing area Has a positive effect not only on the image display but also on navigation in the already clear menu. After a bit small, only the histogram displayed in the info mode next to a picture thumbnail can be switched to RGB histogram.
The EOS 30D has the 9-point autofocus of the EOS 20D, all common exposure programs and a fast image processor (Digic II) for the camera-internal processing of the images. This is as noticeable in the recording as in the picture reproduction. Five frames per second (switchable to 3 fps) creates the camera and at least 30 images in JPEG format at full resolution, according to the manufacturer. In practice, a fast CF card was much more. The closure used should have a minimum of 100 000 releases.
The selection of exposure metering methods has been increased: Until now, matrix, mid-range and selective, were selected, now there is also a spot measurement, which refers to approximately 3.5 percent of the viewfinder field. For comparison: the selective measurement takes about 9 percent of the viewfinder field. Also added is the Print / Share button to the left of the viewfinder eyepiece, which allows you to quickly print direct printing without a PC with PictBridge-compliant printers. Canon has maintained the good operating concept: the two dials, one at the front of the shutter release, the second at the rear with integrated confirmation button, complemented by a small 4-way switch to the right of the TFT monitor, can hardly be surpassed in their combination >
The Picture Style function introduced with the EOS 5D has also entered the EOS 30D. The reason: Until now images from different EOS models differed in part from one another due to differing basic settings, which in some cases caused confusion - especially when users had several housings in use. In the future, the images from all EOS cameras with picture-style function should be comparable with each other by default. The other five presets correspond to the film selection for analog cameras, including the black-and-white mode with the possibility to control the contrast through software filters.
