Tablet-Test: compare and buy with iPad Air, Surface 2 & Co.

In this article with tablet tests you will find comparisons, a purchase advice and more with iPad Air, Surface 2 and other tablet PCs: The two-game between Apple with iOS and various manufacturers with Android tablets has developed into a four-fight. Because Microsoft has also grown into the ring. On the one hand with its own Surface 2 with Windows RT, on the other hand as supplier of Windows 8 or 8.1, which is installed on a whole series of tablets of different manufacturers.

Also interesting is

This means that the tablet buyer has not only the choice between different devices, he must also opt for an ecosystem from the App Store and online services. The eight tablets in the test count with at least 10-inch display and full-HD resolution to the top devices of this device category, next to the Apple iPad Air are still five Android tablets, two Windows 8 devices and the Microsoft Surface 2 With Windows RT with the game.

Apple iPad Air: Slimming for the Apple Tablet

With the number of apps in the respective stores, Android and iOS are roughly equal to about one million. The number of Metro apps in the Windows Store is currently much lower at around 125,000. However, you can still use the full range of traditional Windows programs for tablets with Windows 8 or 8.1.

Captiva Pad 9.7 Super Full HD: Android tablet in Apple format

This option does not exist with Windows RT: although there is a desktop mode, it is only available with programs preinstalled by Microsoft. Because conventional Windows programs run only on x86 processors, ARM processors are used in Windows RT tablets.

However, Android or iOS devices require an app that is already covered by the operating system in Windows, such as access to the file system, network storage, or print.

The iPad Air is somewhat narrower compared to the iPad 4 and instead of 9,4 with only 7.5 millimeters has become thinner. With a weight of 478 grams, it is also the light weight among the tablets in the test and has earned the nickname "Air" so earned.

Since the frame around the 9.7 inch display is only one centimeter wide, Apple has installed like the iPad Mini a function, which recognizes that the device with the thumb on the display captures and thus no function triggers. The new A7 processor from Apple works inside the aluminum housing.

With it the iPad Air is among the fastest tablets on the market, in the Browserbenchmark Peacekeeper it scored 1879 points and leads here with a clear distance in front of the second-place HP with Atom processor.

Also in the other Browsertests the iPad cuts similarly well, although the Apple processor in contrast to the CPUs in the other devices has only two cores. The CPU and the operating system iOS 7 now operate in 64-bit mode, but with only one GB of RAM this is hardly relevant.

More important is already the new PowerVR-G6430 graphics, which provides for a good 14,886 points in the 3DMark Ice Stream Unlimited. In the Peacekeeper battery test, we measure a running time of five hours, which means that in practice a good ten hours are possible. Our test device is the 870-euro-top model of the iPad-Air series with LTE and a full 128 GB of flash as a mass memory.

The Retina display with IPS panel and 2048 x 1536 pixels offers excellent image quality. As the only interface, a proprietary Lightning port is typically available. For the wireless adapter, Apple continues to set to 801.11n.

With a price of almost 250 euros, the Captiva Pad 9.7 is the cheapest tablet in the test. A 9.7 inch IPS panel in a 4: 3 format with 2048 x 1536 pixels is also available as a display, but the Dsiplay is not as brilliant as the Apple tablet.

The Captive tablet equipped with 16 GB of Flash memory is somewhat larger and with 640 grams also heavier than its Apple counterpart. In the Captiva, the Rockkip RK3188 processor is used with four ARM-A9 cores, a 1.6 GHz clock frequency and a Mali 400 GPU. The performance measurements clearly show that the number of cores is by no means the least, and the Captiva is much slower than the other devices in the test for most of the benchmarks.

The 3DMark Ice Storm with only 3248 points is particularly serious. The Captiva is not suitable for more sophisticated 3D games. It looks better with the battery life: we measure almost six hours. There was occasional misfunctions with WLAN access.

Microsoft Surface 2: The tablet with the other Windows

The heart of the HP Omni 10 Tablet PC with Windows 8.1 is the Atom processor Z3770, which is part of Intel's new Bay Trail T family. The dual-core CPU is significantly faster than its predecessor and now on par with the ARM competition, as the 14Browserbenchmarks show: It is here before all Android tablets and just behind the iPad Air.

The GPU is an Intel HD GPU, which provides 15353 points in the 3DMark for a proper 3D performance. Very good is the battery life with almost six hours, which is just surpassed by the much weaker Captiva Tablet. On the other hand, the 32 GB flash memory is somewhat lean for a Windows 8.1 device, as the operating system and software already occupy half the capacity.

A microSD slot is available for additional storage space. There is also a Micro USB and a Micro HDMI socket. The 10-inch IPS panel works with a resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels, while desktop applications require some practice to make buttons and menu items.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1: Light pen tablet with Android

Toshiba Excite Pro: pioneer with Tegra 4

If you are using the Omni 10 more often with desktop applications, such as the Office Home & Student 2013 included with the package, consider the purchase of a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. The screen keyboard of Windows 8 is good, but it occupies quite a lot of space on the screen.

Microsoft is currently the only manufacturer of tablets with Windows RT as the operating system, the Nokia 2520 is not yet on the market. Compared to the first surface tablet, the 430 euro-expensive Surface 2 with 8.9 millimeters has become somewhat flatter and especially faster.

The processor used here is the Tegra 4 from Nvidia. In the browser benchmarks, however, it is behind the Android tablets with the same processor, because Internet Explorer 11 is worse off than Google Chrome used for the other devices.

The 3D performance with 13,801 points in the 3DMark and the almost five hours of battery life are, on the other hand, competitive. The 10.1-inch IPS display provides full-HD resolution as opposed to the predecessor Surface RT, the USB port supports USB 3.0.

A limitation to the x86 tablets with Windows 8 is that the Surface 2 can be installed by the user only Metro apps. However, the RT version of Office 2013 is already preinstalled. For this reason it is essential to purchase a touch or type cover-2 as a magnetically dockable keyboard. They cost 120 or 130 euros. It is practical that the fold-out stand can now be fixed in two positions.

In addition to the fingers, the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 also has a Wacom pen as a second input option. It converts the comparatively light 10-inch tablet into a digital notepad with a weight of 547 grams.

The new 2017 version of the Galaxy Note is now equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 as a processor and above all with a very good IPS display, which now offers a resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels. While the Samsung Tablet with its Adreno 330-GPU integrated in the Snapdragon provides a very good 3D performance for ARM processors, we measure 15383 points, the Galaxy is back in the browser benchmarks despite 3 GB of RAM

On the other hand, it took 318 minutes to test it out of the socket at full load. Instead of the otherwise usual Android buttons on the screen, the Galaxy Note also has three separate hardware buttons in the display frame. Samsung has also modified the preinstalled Android 4.3 with its own touchwiz interface and a multi-window mode for the simultaneous running of two apps.

The icon of the parallel application is dragged from a sidebar to the desktop. The tested version of the Galaxy Note for 610 Euro has only 16 GB Flash, but is the second device in the test field with LTE data transmission in addition to the Apple iPad Air. In addition, a fast WLAN controller with 802.11ac support is installed.

Toshiba has launched Excite Pro, the first Tegra-4 tablet, and other tablets are now available with this processor, such as the Surface 2 in this test. Toshiba has packaged the 380-euro device equipped with 16 GB flash memory into a silver plastic case with a ribbed back, here also the 8MP camera with LED flash and the for a tablet good Harman Kardon loudspeaker.

Besides the Toshiba only the Samsung has a flash. The IPS display also delivers a very high resolution with 2560 x 1600 pixels. With the benchmarks, the 3D performance is weaker compared to the Surface 2, obviously the CPU is throttled here, but the device ran smoothly through all the tests. In the case of the Browserbenchmarks, the Excite Pro, on the other hand, delivers the expected performance, and the battery life is good with 300 minutes in the Peacekeeper battery test. A plus is the modern 802.11ac WLAN controller.
