Whatsapp for iPhone 5 & Co .: Subscription fees now officially confirmed

Until now, the purchase of the Whatsapp messenger for the iPhone was automatically linked to an unlimited usage license. Now the head of company Whatsapp, Jan Koum, announced in an interview that the app is to be introduced this year on iOS devices an annual usage fee.

The subscription model for iOS should then correspond to the offers for the platforms Android, Blackberry and Windows Phone. This means that the use is free in the year of the purchase and in each additional year then a dollar or the corresponding other currency - in each case incurred in fees. Already installed apps are not affected by the change.

Whatsapp is one of the most popular messenger applications. Approximately 17 billion messages are sent per day via the program. The Android version is used by approximately 100 million users worldwide. Despite numerous user protests against the new charges and despite various reports about security deficiencies, the popularity of the SMS replacement seems to continue to grow.
