Netflix over piracy customization, HTTPS connections, and more

The Netflix streaming service is growing in popularity, mainly due to the low price and large range of movies and serials. As the company stated in an interview on the Netflix quarterly balance, piracy is the main factor affecting the price of the service.

So one would not want to charge a too high price for the monthly subscription, since otherwise the users would jump back to illegal downloads. It is therefore necessary to offer an offer which is also competitive against piracy.

According to Kelly Merryman, Vice-President of the content recording, the offer was partly based on the current trend in the robbery copy scene, as opposed to the Dutch IT portal "Tweakers". The series "Prison Break" is popular with robbery, so it was decided to include this series in the offer.

In the course of the quarterly quarter, Netflix also announced the switch from unencrypted HTTP to encrypted HTTPS. The purpose of the change is to protect users both from unwanted guests in open WLAN networks as well as from providers. It remains questionable, however, whether the videos run smoothly even after the changeover.

The streaming service also commented on the much-discussed network neutrality. Netflix is globally committed to the equal rights of all data. Internet providers should not be able to lock out customers of paid services or to slow down their connections.
