Corel PaintShop Pro, the classic alternative image editor, has now reached version number 18, alias X8. It costs in the standard version 70 euros, in the Ultimate version 90 euros. In general both run under Windows 7 and newer.
The powerful and fast image management Aftershot 2 as well as the style filter plug-in On1 Perfect Effects 9.5 together with the semi-automatic correction plug-in Perfectly Clear 2 SE are available for a supplement of 20 euros. The addition is worthwhile for anyone who does not have PaintShop Pro image management.
The Corel PaintShop Pro X8 interface is divided into three tabs: Manage, Customize, and Edit. The integrated administration handles basic functions such as rating, keywords and intelligent folders. Even face detection and a map view for GPS coordinates can be found. A slideshow is missing, but the program can upload images to Facebook, Flickr or Google+. The Adjust mode is only a quick correction of brightness, tonal values, color temperature, sharpness, and noise. Everything works synonymous with RAW files without previous RAW dialog - practically. On the right there are a number of templates. Apart from controls for saturation and liveliness, an extended color correction is unfortunately not provided. However, there are tools for correcting red eyes, minor flaws, crooked horizons, as well as the image section. There is a RAW dialog on the Edit interface - but this is spartan: except for brightness, saturation
Shadow and light restoration and color temperature is not much. After all, you can now find a larger preview and a before-and-after view. Finally, a lens correction including profiles to the RAW converter, which can also be called from the main program. Sophisticated image editors will be pleased to know that PaintShop Pro can handle 16-bit photos. Thanks to enhanced layer and mask functions, rudimentary path tools and color management with Softproof, the program can be quite convincing. Text follows PaintShop Pro longer longer any paths. In the new version, vector shapes can also be filled with text. The PaintShop Pro, which is known from Photoshop, is also known for content-sensitive moving and deleting of objects in the image. With the basic functions, any wishes are still open anyway, but PaintShop Pro awaits with the largest range of functions in the test field. Only the Panoramafunktion is still missing.
Corel is continuously developing PaintShop Pro X8 - and you can see that. Handling is very easy and intuitive in Administration and Customize mode. In Edit mode, creativity is virtually unlimited. Test winner.
