Conclusion NAS test

All NAS devices in our test can convince as powerful storage devices. When it comes to the greatest possible functionality and extensions, you can access Qnap or Synology. Netgear offers special protection mechanisms with snapshots, Btrfs and on-access virus scanners. WD brings slightly less settings and backup options. For this, the NAS has a tidy web interface and can be used as a Smarthome control center using the Z-Wave USB stick.

Expert opinion on the test

All 4 Bay NAS devices in our test offer an excellent job as lush storage solutions with many backup options. The two first-ranked Qnap and Synology offer an incredible functionality together with outstanding support. Our test winner (Qnap) can still be used as a standalone PC and full media center. Anyone with fewer features will be rewarded by Western Digital with a sleek, clear web interface. Netgears NAS has earned its well-deserved prize-winning title with its sophisticated remote access, on-access scanner, bit-red protection, and snapshot backups.

Our test method for NAS devices

The entire functional diversity of different NAS devices in a comparison test is almost not possible. Nevertheless, we have made every conceivable effort to have a number of special features to contribute positively to the evaluation.

Our testing process begins with the installation and setup of the NAS device. Here we already gain the first evaluation criteria for the test. These include, for example, corresponding search or help functions. The maximum transfer rate was determined at one of the two LAN ports, the noise is measured in the idle of the NAS from a distance of one meter. Among the software functionality of the NAS, we also evaluate the various data backup options.
