Tunlr: Lock locked streams - this is how it works

The dream of the Internet as a boundless space with unlimited freedom seems to have burst. At least since the beginning of large corporations the web users have to expose themselves to constant hallucinations. Especially media websites restrict their accessibility to the local location of their visitors.

Tunlr brings the freedom

The reason for this are licensing requirements, which allow streaming video and music only for certain regions. The lock works quite simply: Exclude all users who have an IP address beyond the national boundaries - because these addresses can be assigned unambiguously to the country level.

The vermouth drops: Grooveshark and YouTube are not supported

The US service Tunlr wants to counter this frustrating status quo. The name is based on the popular blogging service Tumblr. So near even that he falls victim to Google's autocorrection function. If you want to search Tunlr on the Internet, you should always use the -Tumblr search parameter to avoid accidentally getting the wrong results.

Security risk through Tunlr

Tunl's goal is to remove the country restrictions of streaming providers worldwide. After all, there are no tangible limits on the Internet - and anyone who knows how to help can completely and legally replace their own IP address with another. Previously used methods such as a VPN or a proxy usually cost money. However, Tunlr offers its DNS unblocking service free of charge and without the need for registration.

To set Tunlr to

The service is however limited to a handful of American and British websites. But Tunlr does not cost anything - unlike other services similar to Steganos.

Services, which are blocked only in isolated countries such as the United States, are currently not supported. Including Grooveshark and YouTube - the GEMA warning remains.

This is how the procedure works: If you select one of the supported Internet services, the Tunlr DNS sends the request from your web browser instead to the Proxyserver of Tunlr, which triggers the page at your site and gets access with its US or UK IP address.

However, the proxy process is only applied to geo authorization. For this reason, Tunlr's service is so fast - as soon as the stream starts, the data stream runs over your personal line. Until then, a so-called man-in-the-middle proxy is used.

This means that the supported websites run through the proxy of Tunlr and all others that you might want to control over a normal DNS. Tunlr decides not to track the IPs of its users, although this is possible in principle. Before you begin, however, you must be aware that by redirecting to Tunlr DNS, you may compromise the security of your system.

By assigning the IP from Tunlr, the service also determines where you are surfing and could theoretically send you to phishing pages when you are accessing pages that are not supported by Tunlr. To avoid this threat, you have two options: Either you use the DNS service only if you are using only the supported media providers, then you return to the default DNS, or you use Tunlr in a virtual machine

If you take these tips to heart, you can go to the "made". In these five steps, you set up Tunlr

The address may change over time. To be sure, check out the Tunlr Help page.

There you will also find instructions for setting up on other operating systems and also for tablets and even Apple TV, which is basically the same as the one shown here. As an alternative DNS server, you should enter a reliable and trustworthy alternative. The largest of these is Google Public DNS, which you can reach at 8.8.8.8.

Netflix deletion promises nothing good

Do not forget to reset these settings and restart your browser as soon as you no longer want to use the Tunlr service.

The support of the popular video-on-demand service 'Netflix from the US has been one of the main reasons to use Tunlr for fans of Hollywood cinema until recently. At the beginning of October, however, Tunlr suddenly stopped the support. The service was designed to allow users outside the US to access a paid Netflix account.

The software alternative

However, when Netflix Inc. extended its reach to new regions such as the UK, Canada and Brazil, there was tensions between the company and Tunlr. Residents of these countries can only choose from a much smaller film archive and therefore used Tunlr to access the abundant US offer.

Netflix Inc., which benefits from region-specific licensing fees, saw its business model endangered, so Tunlr had to give up the Netflix support - this separate form of blocking is, of course, always delivered to Tunlr.

In addition, Tunlr is completely free. As a result, there is no guarantee for you as a user that you can access it at any time, since the "load" of the data transfer is borne by the Tunlr developers. For this reason, Tunlr calls its users to disable Tunlr DNS as soon as they no longer want to use it for streaming.

Conclusion

The advantage of a costly solution like OkayFreedom from Steganos: Everything runs encrypted over an IP and Youtube is also there.

You can also use OkayFreedom to bypass country locks. In contrast to Tunlr the software gaukelt the controlled web server however a wrong IP. The VPN technology ensures that all traffic remains encrypted and is not visible by third parties. You use the software from a list of programmable IP addresses, which gives you the advantage of determining the geolocation of your data. This helps similar to Tunlr, if Internet offers allow only visitors from a particular country.

The biggest advantage over Tunlr is the integration of YouTube, which you can easily reach through IP address changes. The proverbial catch hides behind the OkayFreedom price model, which is based on the bandwidth you are streaming. Unlike with Tunlr, all the data runs through the proxy. Three different versions are available, but they offer the same security standards and customer service.

Free: Here you pay nothing, but are limited to a stream of 500 MB per month. For each referenced user, there are 100 MByte each, up to a maximum of 1 GB per month.

Premium: For $ 4.95 per month, you can stream 5 GB per month and receive 500 MB per user, with a maximum of 10 GB per month.

Premium Flat: A monthly payment of 9.95 euros finally raises any restrictions. You can stream as much as you want.

Tunlr shows with smart technology how it is possible to bypass internet locks. Nevertheless, in the medium term the sheer popularity of the service could also force Tunlr to its knees. Still, it is not so far! That is why our recommendation is: try out Tunlr and enjoy its advantages as long as the service exists in this form. Because, despite a few disadvantages, you do not find a simpler alternative in the net to receive quality television and radio from asu around the world.
