Tablets under 200 euros in the test: Although all devices compare in comparison at least 1024 x 768 pixels. However, both brightness and viewing angle stability are a thing of the past in Acer, Blaupunkt and TrekStor devices. The fun factor in couch surfing is rather low with these devices, because depending on the tilt of the device on the screen hardly anything is clear.

More pleasure is provided by the more valuable Surf Books by Asus, Amazon and Kobo. Their displays are bright and also offer a good view from an oblique angle. The fact that the Kindle Fire HD is nevertheless the final light in the test, among other things, is that a camera and an interface for microSD cards are missing.
Nexus 7
Also the Asus and Google manufactured Nexus 7 comes out without camera and microSD-Kartenslot. However, the 7-inch monitor convinces with its bright, high-resolution screen. The 1280 x 800 pixel resolution display is stable, stable colors, good contrast. In bright sunlight, however, as usual with tablets, disturbances disturb the reading pleasure. However, the performance of the Nexus 7 is also impressive. The tablet is powered by a Tegra-3 quad-core processor from Nvidia.
Amazon Kindle Fire HD and Kobo Arc
This ensures smooth operation and smooth video enjoyment. And in performance benchmarks, he runs out of competition. Despite the considerable speed, the battery of the Nexus 7 remains surprisingly long. With typical load, there are almost seven hours of surfing or fun. If the 16 GB of memory of the Nexus 7 is not enough for movies and photos, it can back up files free of charge in the Google Cloud. If you want to store large amounts of data locally on your tablet, access a Nexus model with 32 GB of memory. With additional Internet access (SIM card slot) it costs about 100 euros more.
Blaupunkt Edeavour 8 and Trekstor SurfTab ventos 8
Also the tablets of the online bookstores Amazon and Kobo are available in a more expensive version with more memory. There is the Tablet PC of the Canadian bookbinder Kobo even in three equipment variants with 16, 32 or 64 GB of memory. The largest model then costs around 300 euros. Common to the two tablets is that they are essentially shopping terminals of Internet bookstores. Both Amazon and Kobo offer their users on the Lesestoff homepage.
In Amazon's Kindle Fire HD, however, the symbiosis with the online shop is radical, with appropriate benefits: Amazon offers already appear on the screen. They can not be suppressed. If you do not wish to receive any advertising, you must access a 15 euro more expensive tablet version. Amazon has not only modified the homepage, but the entire user interface, even if it is based on Andorid. Kobo, on the other hand, grants its tablet a full-fledged Android operating system, only a reading app on the homepage and reading offers lead to the online bookshop.
Still, the Kindle Fire HD and the Kobo Arc are tablets and no e-book readers. The latter have an e-ink display, while both Amazons Kindle Fire HD and Kobos Arc have high-resolution IPS displays (resolution 1280 x 800 pixels). Color and contrast values are really neat, even with oblique viewing angles, display contents are still visible.
For fast work, the Kindle Fire HD provides a 1.2 GHz fast dual-core processor. Kobo's Arc is powered by a slightly faster (1.5 GHz) dual-core processor, which is also reflected in a better performance performance test. In addition, the two tablets are very spartan, as there are no interfaces for SD cards let alone connections for HDMI.
Connected fans can be seen at the first glance identical tablets of Blaupunkt and TrekStor. In addition to a micro USB port, they score points with a micro HDMI slot. TVs can be directly connected and movies can be transferred. In addition, both tablets have a microSD card slot. If the resulting 32 GB memory is not enough, additional external memory can be connected via the supplied USB adapter.
As the only devices in the test, the two tablets have a camera on the back of the case. However, their resolution is only 2 megapixels, so the photography is only recommended to a limited extent. The front cameras are suitable with their resolution of 0.3 megapixels, as usual in the device class, at most for video chat.
The performance of the two 8-inchers is rather disappointing. Although their processors are clocked at 1.5 GHz (Blaupunkt) and 1.6 GHz (TrekStor) higher than at Amazon's Kindle Fire HD or Acers Iconia B1. They are clearly lagging behind in the competition's benchmarks. This coincides with the test impression that movies or games occasionally jerky. The screens of the cheap tablets are not really convincing.
Its resolution is 1024 x 768 pixels, but the colors, brightness and contrast are also a bit too much to be desired. The battery, which is rated at 5100 mAh, is quite generous in the case of the Blaupunkt Edeavour 8 battery for eight hours at a typical load - a dream value that no other tablet will ever achieve in the test.
Acer's savings tablet is two hours ahead of the pack. For this, the Iconia B1 is not only the cheapest device in the test, but also with its 320 grams the lightest. Savings Acer has especially on the housing material. It is made entirely of plastic and does not have high quality. Also the processing is not quite convincing: already with slight pressure the housing crashed.
Acer Iconia B1
The blue border strip looks quite smart. Inside the cheap tablet works a 1.2 GHz fast dual-core processor. Record-breaking is by no means the case, but most of the applications run smoothly, apart from occasional crashes. It is certainly due to the fact that only 512 MBytes rather small failed work memory. Also, the display leaves a medium-sized impression, with pale colors and a low viewing angle.
The resolution of the 7-inch screen is only 1024 x 600 pixels. Overall, the features of Acers Iconia B1 is rather modest. To a camera on the back couchpotatoes as well as an HDMI port do not have to. There is microSD card slot
Expert opinion
If you are on the sofa or on the road times a little surfing, check emails, play a game or read an e-book, can confidently grab a mini-tablet. They are much smaller, lighter and more handy than the large 10 inch devices. And, fortunately, even the cheap surf books offer a very convincing performance.
Of course, the price has to be restricted. Thus, connection possibilities are limited and the camera equipment leaves much to be desired with most Minis - with the exception of the iPad mini, which also plays in price in another category. The Minis can be used as a cool second-hand device for surfing.
If you place a tablet for less than 200 euros on a table, you can not expect a maximum performance. Making a real winner in the test field is not difficult. Finally, Asus with the Nexus 7 provides a consistently convincing performance. The fact that only a generally satisfactory result can be achieved at the end is due to the fact that features such as camera, memory extension or HDMI connection are missing.
