If you double-click a file in Windows Explorer or choose the Open command from the context menu of the file, it will open with the program that is set as default for the corresponding file type - for text files with extension .txt, this is the Windows editor. In general, the default assignments of Windows are appropriate, but sometimes you want to deviate and set other default programs.
For example, you might not want to have registry files (extension.reg) run from the registry editor, but open it in the editor for editing. To set a new default program for a particular file type, you do not need to go into the system control.
Click the file with the right mouse button and select Open with from the context menu. On the submenu, click to select the default program (Windows 7, Windows 8.1), or click Select another app (Windows 10), even if the program you want to open the file is offered here Br>
Reading Tip: Windows 10 - so you put programs in the autostart folder
Now activate the option Always open the file type with the selected program (under Windows 10 Always use this app to open .reg files, whereby the extension - hier.reg - of course depends on the file type)
Then select the program with which you want to open the file and close the dialog box with OK. Afterwards, Windows will automatically open all files of the appropriate type with the new program
