The market leader is hunted by all competitors. They look at what features can be improved and look for weaknesses to take away market shares. Samsung has been the front-runner for flat-panel monitors for years and is defending this position with very hard bandages. The manufacturer does not rest on his fame, but is always a step ahead of his hunters. The recipe seems simple, but as usual, the devil is in the details.

Samsung simply wants to build the best TVs in the world: those with which everything is right. No important feature is forgotten, no quality requirement is too high.
Samsung UE55F8090: Operation
But whoever wants to do it all rightly meets contradictory claims, which he can not fulfill at the same time. One example is the slenderness of the devices. Samsung had world records in mind and delivered with LG a solitary head-to-head race. One had to ignore the technique of local dimming, which gave the best picture, but the TV significantly lower.
Samsung UE55F8090: Functions
The decision fell in favor of better design. Now the small frame is cataloged, in which the LEDs for the backlighting of the display are now housed. Samsung engineers have met the designers' requirements and can reduce the frame to a sensational eight millimeter width - but not without darkening the first pixels of the TV picture.

Another example: the amount of smart features in the new top TVs is overwhelming. Whether it is internet apps, streaming and media functions, recording and decoding options or the interaction with a tablet or mobile phone, the software in a TV is now megamonströs. And to get hold of this monster, you need to create more and more complex controls than you want.
The new Samsung accepts not only two remote controls, an optional USB keyboard, USB mouse, smartphone or HDMI, but also gesture control and full-sentence speech recognition. And to control other devices, an infrared transmitter is included. Obviously, the ancient struggle between feature flood and simple operation is clearly beneficial to the equipment.
Buying advice: All Samsung TVs in the test
In order to achieve a good compromise, however, the user interface has been completely revised and is actually clearer than in previous years. The hundreds of multimedia sweets were distributed on several main screens. A waiver or the concentration on the essential does not take place - what is that?
It was even heavily armed. The taming of the TV program was given special attention. The television monitors what you like to look at at which time of the day and then automatically remembers your favorite shows. A higher level of intelligence, such as similar events were found, could not be discovered during the test period. The contents we look at are too chaotic. How positive the S-recommendation in everyday life affects, one can probably only after several weeks of selective television.
The range of equipment and multimedia features that Samsung makes available to us is absolutely stunning.
The Koreans have also introduced a feature that users have been waiting for a long time, which catapults the Samsung in our evaluation as the only 55-inch model in the "outstanding" rating category: the double tuner. Until now, a unique feature of the devices from Loewe, Metz and TechniSat, Samsung now drives two-track. Two independent receiving units allow you to record a program other than the one you are watching.
Buying advice: Five 55-inch LCD TVs at test
The classic application to watch two TV programs with picture-in-picture will be revived, but Samsung goes one step further. A live TV program can be streamed independently on a Samsung tablet. This works obviously with the digital rights, so encrypted, because the HD-Plus transmitters also work.
The program is re-compressed to transfer, so we could even look at Blu-ray discs, which were imported via HDMI, on the tablet. Great! Probably due to our overcrowded company network, however, the multi-display connection of the SmartView App often failed.
Just as in vain, we tried to transfer our mobile phone display to the TV via Miracast.
Here only then a Samsung app on the Samsung mobile phone Galaxy S III. Since Miracast is so far hardly available in source devices, but soon will find wide support, we assume that the Samsung TV will be more compatible through an update. In any case, the predecessor series of the TV has been listed on the website of the WiFi consortium as functioning.
If you look at the parameters, which can be adjusted in the image menu, one hardly meets new ones, one counts slightly improved Eindeutschungen with. The measurement results of the excellent color accuracy, the correct brightness level (gamma) and the high-quality contrast of the previous year's models could hardly be improved. This also applies to the smoothing of the movement: Here Samsung was already in the front in 2012 and even with the messy, glass-clear processing of poor image sources even top class.
To criticize was the so-called banding (striping), which had even several causes, and Clouding, thus an uneven partitioning of the background lighting, which results in grauschleiern in dark scenes.
Both effects are absolutely negligible in our test pattern: On the one hand, the electronics have obviously been improved, because quantization errors in dark areas that are streaks are no longer present. Also, vertical banding resulting from minimum voltage differences of driver chips.
Practice: Optimal settings for Samsung TVs
Light spots in black, which are triggered by mechanical stresses during production, also play no role in our test equipment. The depth of black is not synonymous despite Samsung's Microdimming Ultimate as good as the locally dimmed models of Sony and Philips, but nice evenly. The light sensor, which powers the screen power in the dark room, makes the monitor appear darker and more saturated.
The color reproduction is great, but suffers greatly from the side view angle. You get a really excellent picture only from the front. Then, however, the resolution is excellent: everything appears very brilliant in bright colors. According to our measurements, these correspond exactly to the specifications of the TV standards.
Samsung's motion smoothing with real 200 hertz, ie three calculated phases between two original film images, works soothingly and is largely error-free. Even in the case of granular sources, object structures are tracked in full sharpness. This is brave, because here problems would immediately become visible. Since Samsung has eliminated most of the predecessors' criticisms, we have rated the image as "outstanding".
The times of the quaking ultraflates are also over with the sound. Although the perceived dynamic is still limited by physical laws, news and even some films can be enjoyed with a good conscience.
