Music streaming over the Internet has fundamentally changed the way we consume music. For decades we bought albums or songs: as a record, cassette, CD or digital download. Today the trend is heading towards renting. The subscriber gets the opportunity to listen to as much music as he or she wants. The fact that such flat-rate services is not just something for a few music fans was finally clear when Aldi launched his own service in September 2017: the discounter, who knows the wishes of the Germans almost no other. Three months earlier, Apple entered the business of music flatrates, followed in November by Amazon.

In the United States, there are now a dozen such streaming services. To find the best, PC Magazine tested the six most promising offers: Aldi life music, Amazon Prime Music, Apple Music, Deezer, Google Play Music and Spotify. They all offer the possibility to stream music over the Internet via computers, tablets and smartphones - but only on one device at the same time. Mobile apps, on the other hand, allow you to download songs to multiple devices to listen offline on the go. When the subscription expires, it is also possible to play the locally stored songs.
