Not compatible

Problems can arise with devices. Computers do not have a American keyboard, power plug does not fit or the current voltage is different (USA: 110 Volt). Often there are solutions for special power supplies or adapters, but since the customer has to charge costs. Some devices are also blocked, the often cheaper iPhone abroad, and can not be operated legally here.

Consumer rights abroad

Consumer rights abroad are usually not bad (see "consumer rights abroad"), but every problem requires language skills and expensive return. If you want to spare yourself, look around here. Because often the prices of special shops are among those of the big dealers, and they can keep up with the foreign countries.

At Bücher.de, there is no shipping costs, and price comparison sites like Guenstiger.de or Idealo.de are looking for bargains. Often, the price hunter hits on the UK imports, which has the advantage that the responsible dealer is located in the United States and is responsible for the process and the compatibility.

It is easy for consumers to buy within the EU, because they have the same rights.

Guarantee: The EU set standards in the consumer goods directive ten years ago, which have now been implemented by all EU countries. The seller (not the manufacturer) must guarantee for two years if something is wrong with the product sold.

In the first six months the burden of proof lies with the seller that the customer may have caused damage. After six months, however, the customer must prove that the product was not right from the beginning.

Specifically, this means that if a mobile phone bought abroad is broken within the first half year, the exchange at the dealer is usually not a problem at all. After that, it becomes more difficult for the buyer, and the repair depends more on the goodwill of the seller. A mobile phone with clear scratches will not be taken back by a dealer.

Further information is available at the European Consumer Center in Kiel, for example the brochure http://www.evz.de/mediabig/613A.pdf.

Revocation: The right to cancel remote sales via the catalog or the Internet is regulated throughout Europe. It is at least seven days, but many countries have extended the deadline, for example the United States to 14 days.

During this period a customer may revoke a transaction without reason. This does not apply to open films, games or food, but for example for electrical appliances. You can find more information on the pages of the respective consumer center (see http://www.ecc-net.info/).

Manufacturing guarantee: The manufacturing guarantee is something else which is not regulated by law. The manufacturer determines the time frame and makes conditions, such as who must bear the shipping costs. He can also determine that the customer can only report a device purchased in England as a guarantee claim.

Large manufacturers often grant generous and worldwide guarantees, which the customer nevertheless often has to fight with on the spot. It does not hurt to remove the warranty card.

Overseas: Those who buy something in the US, China or the Philippines do not profit from the EU guarantee. Some countries have similar rules, such as the British Channel Islands, in others the only one is the manufacturing guarantee, which is often worse than in Europe. The customer should inform himself beforehand which rights apply. And their enforcement from the United States is also doubtful.
