Battlefield 4 on Test: The new first-person shooter from DICE is supposed to make everything better, bigger and more spectacular than its predecessor. At least technicians succeed in doing this at least. In other disciplines the developers remain behind your possibilities. As a test object we have caught the PC version of Battlefield 4. In our review, you will read about the strengths and weaknesses of the Battlefield 4 campaign. An assessment of the multiplayer mode with new game modes such as obliteration or returned features such as the Commander mode will follow later when the typical attack on the release with classic errors has subsided.
Battlefield 4 on Test: Story, AI and Atmosphere
Battlefield 4 is about a fictitious conflict between two great powers in the near future. There is the US and its allies on the one hand, as well as China and Russia on the other. As a US Soldier Recker, you fight through various missions with lots of variety. The playing time is about six to eight hours. Dialogues and missions are, however, anything but thrilling during this time, because also actor Moritz Bleibtreu as a speaker of Staff Sgt. Dunn helps little. The characters are barely illuminated. There are therefore hardly any ways to identify with them. Significantly, we know little about the name of the main character.

Problems and destiny of the subjects leave the player thus usually cold. Rather, in the course of history, you are more and more often encountering situations in which the makers seem to want to leave as few clichés as possible. To this end, the campaign of Part 4 has changed in some respects compared to its predecessor: fewer scripts, more variety in the battlefields and more playful freedom. The "spotting" from the multiplayer mode - the tagging of pointed opponents - now also works in solo mode.

Also, developer DICE offers more freedom to play when it comes to achieving his mission goal - either in the team with the AI-controlled squad members or with available colleagues in tanks or helicopters. The AI, however, usually acts anything but wise. It was often observed in the test that our squad was besieged by opponents. Individual opponents were hiding visibly in front of our colleagues in corners or behind low projections. Instead of the AI attacking independently, she waited for our order. The feeling of being in good hands with his comrades in the respective situation remained the same.
What Battlefield 4 has mastered like the predecessor is the sound. If you have to escape from the roofs of a building on an industrial site and an enemy helicopter shoots at Klump all the time, you feel right at home - as long as your home system plays along. Shots of guns, tanks, or explosions simply sound breathtaking. Here, Battlefield 4 sets new standards. The music develops dynamically and mostly fits - as long as it does not become too emotional: especially in scenes in which you as a player are hardly as feverish. This is often involuntary funny scenes. Tip: If possible, set the language to English. Then it's not quite as bad.
Battlefield 4 relies on the Frostbite Engine 3. Ultra-settings with a correspondingly powerful PC will open up to you the currently most advanced and prettiest game with the current military setting. The textures are largely crack-sharp and the light effects together with smoke, dust and countless details create an optics on the screen, which make even graphics boards like Crysis 3 look old. In addition to this, there is a realistic physics, lively animations and destruction features in the game world, which could arouse childhood fantasies in you and simply animate you. "
The paradise of Battlefield 4 is once again the multiplayer mode, which we devote ourselves separately and later. DICE drives the Destruction feature with "Levelution" a step further. Scripted collapses or other catastrophes in the campaign already reveal how the multiplayer mode has to feel if one does not run on a card, as in the campaign, one or more, but up to 64 shooting players. Certain functions on a map then trigger large disasters such as a dam dam with flooding of the remaining area or a high-rise collapse. In the campaign, this is also observed in some cases, and it is likely that even if the technology is pampered, the jaw-dropping jaw will open.
The Battlefield 4 system requirements are slightly higher than in the predecessor, although the majority of Battlefield 3 players can also enjoy the successor with playable image refresh rates. In a direct comparison, the loading times were significantly higher: even if Origin and the game are on an SSD. Ruckler or constant reloading with the given size of the game world were limited: Top!
The Battlefield 4 campaign should be more important than its predecessor. But this has not been achieved: Although everything is bigger and more spectacular, but not necessarily better. The short campaign is only a one-time warm-up program for the multiplayer mode. This should be the most important buying criterion for most players anyway. The solo part offers hardly any repetition. The story is negligible, just like the AI. However, if you want to see (in addition to the multiplayer mode) what is technically possible on a PC today, Battlefield 4 will not get around.
