Brexit vs. Breturn: 4Chan manipulated online petition

London, Scotland and Northern Ireland as well as two-thirds of all young people are not satisfied with the outcome of the Brexit referendum. Therefore, an online petition was launched to collect signatures for a renewed vote on UK residency in the UK.


The heads of the petition hoped to gather enough signatures to ensure that the vote on EU resignation was repeated. They refer to an argument from the advocates of the withdrawal. These had been used before the vote for a re-election, if the result does not reach at least a consent of 60 percent. In addition, before voting, the Brexit supporters voted for a repeat of the election if the electoral participation is not at least 75%. These figures were not achieved either.


The number of signatures on the online petition shot up quickly. Almost 4 million signatories call for a re-vote on the EU's fate. Thus the signature collection would have far exceeded its goal. Only 100,000 signatures are needed to enable Parliament to consider the claim.

Soon, however, it became clear that a large part of the signatures were falsified. The massive response to the vote is a joke from users of the online community 4Chan. Members of the website have manipulated the vote and have voted several times with IP addresses from different countries. For this, they used scripts that automatically filled out hundreds of thousands of forms with incorrect data, thus signing for a new vote. Such petitions can only be signed by the British. Since the whole went online and no identity test took place, 4Chan could cast votes from different areas. The responsible people were very creative. There were votes from the Antarctic and North Korea. Partially, more voices came from a place that has inhabitants.

To prove that the many voices are from them, authors of 4Chan published dozens of screenshots of the scripts that seemed to make the petition so successful. The fraud has now been revealed, so far 77,000 votes have been removed.
