All speak of UHD televisions, but hardly anyone has to offer films in fourfold full-HD resolution. Maxdome CEO Andreas Heyden has already announced that this is to be changed very quickly in an exclusive interview with video-magazin.de a week ago. Now, the largest online video store in the United States has proved that this is also possible.
Maxdome demonstrates 4K Stream
Before journalists, the Maxdome technicians showed this week a first demo for UHD streaming via the Internet. Short excerpts from "Der Medicus" and various UHD-produced documentaries from the Red Bull Media House were presented, which were transmitted live and with dynamic data rates between 16 and 25 Mbps in the HEVC codec (H.265). The image quality was almost consistently super, only a few jerkers and misfunctions underlined between times that it was actually live streaming - picture and sound were from a Maxdome test server live via Internet on a development version of the UHD app on a Samsung UHD- TV broadcasting
Maxdome wants to stream feature films in UHD
What the Maxdome experts have now done with short excerpts, is to be seen in IFA 2017 in the first public demonstrations. For 2017 the official launch shot for UHD films at Max cathedrals is planned. An exact date has not yet been fixed, as are the conditions for this. Andreas Heyden indicated, however, that UHD films in single-shot will cost similar extra charges, as already HD films compared to the SD version. According to Heyden, one is currently in the experimental phase. The demo also had a tense excitement among the numerous Maxdome experts present.
Encoding specialist Markus Rasokat, for example, reported on the edge of the event that the current UHD encoders needed up to ten seconds to convert a single film image. Encoding a three-minute trailer can take up to 12 hours. Dynamic streaming, in which the data rate in several stages automatically adapts to the available bandwidth, is planned for commercial operation in any case, according to the Maxdome experts.
Up to now, only Netflix in the US, UK and some other countries are broadcasting UHD movies commercially as online streams. Currently, the online video store exclusively shows the self-produced "House of Cards" on current UHD TVs, such as Samsung, LG or Sony. Maxdome, on the other hand, wants UHD movies and documentary points, according to Andreas Heyden. Sports features and documentation of nature, for example, are already available in a larger number of the Red Bull Media House, and more and more feature films are also to be available in UHD resolution in the coming months. The encoders then have to be slightly faster.
The new UHD TVs of the big manufacturers are practically all able to receive UHD movies in the H.265 / HEVC format via Internet, but will need new apps for corresponding online video stores. Maxdome has teamed up with Samsung to demonstrate the technology, but will certainly launch UHD-enabled TV apps for other brands. After all, the online video store has firmly established itself on smart TVs: About 70 percent of all film footage at Maxdome takes place via the TV screen, reports Andreas Heyden - that is via a smart TV app, game console or over other web TV boxes >
