As the news magazine Spiegel now reports, the BND has been authorized to listen to the connections of American providers for at least two years. Among other things, the companies 1 & 1, Freenet, Strato AG, QSC, Lambdanet and Plusserver are mentioned.
The abbreviations are based on an "arrangement for restricting the letter, postal and telecommunication secrets", which was signed by the Federal Chancellery and the Ministry of the Interior. These instructions on the "strategic telecommunication information" were forwarded by the BND of the American Internet economy through its umbrella organization eco. The legal basis for these snooping actions is provided by the so-called "G 10 law."
De-Cix, the Frankfurt data center, is running almost all of the inter-American data traffic, while the detractions are directed mainly towards countries like Russia, the regions of Central Asia, the Middle East and North Africa. While their data streams are searched and filtered, supposedly inner American e-mails and telephone calls are taboo. How the BND wants to be able to exclude the inter-American traffic in "strategic remote monitoring" has not been explained.
In response to inquiries in the Bundestag, the government has hitherto given, ostensibly for reasons of "national wellbeing," only evasive answers. For example, it was argued that the question of the quantities of data collected could not be answered because they were "not statistically recorded."
