In the second part of our large Systemkamera-Kaufberatung (the first part you will find here) the diversity is governed, which is also reflected in an enormous price range – the cheapest and most expensive model differ by price by a factor of 10 .
Size of the image sensor
This begins with the size of the image sensor: a total of eight models use a small-format sensor, six operate with one sensor in APS-C format, four with four-thirds sensor. The CMOS of the Canon EOS 1D Mark IV (27.9 x 18.6 mm, image angle factor 1.3) is located between APS-C and KB format. Completely out of the frame is the modular Ricoh GRX, in which not only the lens is replaced, but a module with optics, image sensor and processor. The size of the image processor varies with the module used.
The range of mirrorless system cameras of the new generation is limited in this selection to three models: Olympus Pen E-P2, Panasonic DMC-GH1 and Ricoh GRX, each of which sets individual accents. The Leica M9 also comes without a mirror - as a digitally upgraded camera classic, which differs considerably in terms of price and technology from the other three models. A detailed discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of mirrorless system cameras can be found in volume 8 and at www.colorfoto.de
Housing quality The Canon EOS 50D already has a camera housing made of robust light metal (magnesium), which also satisfies semiprofessional requirements. This series can be continued with other models from Canon (EOS 7D, 5D Mk II), Nikon (D300s, D700), Olympus (E-3), Pentax (K-7) and Sony (Alpha 850/900). Most are also sealed against dust and splashing water. Exception: the EOS 50D, which only applies to the memory card and battery.
The professional models of Canon and Nikon are equipped with a built-in rechargeable battery handle and without a built-in flash, which could be a potential housing weak point. The Nikon D300s / D700 or Olympus E-3 have it on board, but the Sony Alpha 850 and 900 are not. The EOS 50D and 7D with APS-C sensor gives Canon a flash, while the EOS 5D Mark II despite the same camera concept has to do without it. Buy a flash unit but also with the design camera Olympus Pen E-P2.
Viewfinder and monitor A large optical viewfinder is one of the quality features of a (semi-) professional system camera, with the largest viewfinders with an effective magnification of 0.7x predominantly in the full format models. Exception: the electronic viewfinder of the Panasonic DMC-GH1. In the case of a camera with an APS-C format sensor, on the other hand, an effective search magnification of 0.6x as the measuring bar is valid. With the TFT monitor, 3 inches is the current standard, and a high resolution of more than 300,000 RGB pixels is found on most models - exceptions such as Canon's top model EOS 1Ds Mark III (76700 pixels) confirm the rule.
Live-View and VideoLive-View is almost commonplace, apart from Sony's Alpha models and the Leica M9. There are also many video cameras (except Sony Alpha, Leica M9 and E-models from Olympus), with Canon alone with four models with full HD video. The Panasonic DMC-GH1, which has been optimized for video applications (Lumix G Vario HD 4-5.8 / 14-140 Asph. OIS), is the Panasonic DMC-GH1, the undefeated queen of the moving picture. The autofocus works fast And quiet, the aperture control infinitely.
Operating concept The operating concepts of the cameras assembled here differ greatly according to the different orientation from design to reportage. In the class above 1000 euros, one will tend to find models which can be operated more intuitively than cameras of the consumer class due to numerous control elements. Especially noticeable with the Nikon, if you compare a D300s / D700 with a D5000, D90 or even D3000.
Conclusion
The Canon EOS 550D and Nikon D90, two APS-C models, get a great deal for their excellent price / performance ratio, both models cost around 700 euros. If the image quality is in the foreground, a handle to full-size cameras makes sense since their larger sensor surface allows correspondingly higher image quality at high sensitivities. Both purchase tips, the Canon EOS 5D Mk II and Nikon D700, cost however well 2000 euro. At 4800 euros, the Nikon D3s professional model is a recommendation and specialist for high-ISO photography, while the Olympus E-P2 scores with an exquisite design. The Panasonic DMC-GH1 offers the currently most consistent solution for full-HD movie quality with AF support - Kauftipp video.
