Whatsapp: AboFly buttons users 4.99 euros per week

Caution! Whatsapp users should take special care when receiving spam messages from the Messenger. As the Consumer Center Saxony warns, advertising messages are currently circulating, which lure into a subscription. In the news, new Whatsapp functions are referred to and invited to click on a link. Anyone who follows the link will find on the next telephone bill a subscription from a third-party provider – cost point: 4.99 euros per week. Whatsapp itself has nothing to do with these third parties.

The Whatsapp Abzockers use the often criticized WAP billing, which can be paid via the mobile phone bill. A confirmation of the user via PIN or TAN number is not necessary. "Providers have an incredibly easy game to subdue users' money," says Katja Henschler of the Consumer Center of Saxony.

Anyone who has been tapped into the Whatsapp subscription will be advised by the consumer protection authorities to disregard all claims and not to pay the amount. When paying by telephone, the monthly payment should be rebooked and the corresponding corrected amount should be transferred separately to the mobile operator.

For protection against ripple stitches such as the Whatsapp subscription, users should have their third party provider set up with their mobile provider. This is provided free of charge and ensures, depending on the provider, that no or specific services are excluded from the WAP billing. The portal Computerbetrug.de provides detailed information on the third-party barrier.
