MeasureIt is a free extension for Firefox and is aimed at web designers. With MeasureIt, you can measure distances accurately and incorporate them into your page design.

An icon in the Firefox status bar provides you with a wealth of features to measure content on websites. Click and drag while holding down the right mouse button to determine the size of images and text, or the distance between different objects in web pages.
During Measure, MeasureIt displays a helpful ruler that is used to read the distance. The ruler is in the form of a half-transparent overlay over the selected document. The dimensions of the ruler are adjustable, as are the other visual properties. The determined values of height and width are specified in several units, for example in pixels, directly next to the ruler.
