LucidSound LS30 in test

We tested the LucidSound LS30.

LucidSound LS30: Workmanship and comfort

In the field of gaming headsets, LucidSound from San Diego is a newcomer. What makes the provider interesting, is its founder Chris Von Huben. He raised years ago the gaming audio brand Tritton, Tritton sold however then to Mad Catz. So now the reboot with LucidSound.

LucidSound LS30: Numerous connection options

The first gaming headsets of the still young company are on the market. Exciting is especially the wireless LS30: It promises compatibility with consoles such as PS4 / PS3 and Xbox One / 360 and is also to be suitable for mobile use. The PC saves LucidSound. We still wanted to know if the headset is suitable for Windows gamers. The test.

LucidSound LS30: Class Sound Quality

The LS30 looks very high-quality right away - and it is also! The solid metal strap gives the headset a great stability. The top of the adjustable strap is sufficiently well padded. The earcups can be turned 90 degrees. The headset can not be collapsed. If you are not wearing your head, you need a bag for transport.

LucidSound LS30: Conclusion

With around 350 grams, the headphone is not a light weight, but also not uncomfortably heavy. The thick padding of the ear cups is extremely pleasant. These encircle the ears and leave enough space even for large "eavesdroppers". Longer wearing was no problem in our practice test at the end of November. On hot summers, however, it might get a little too warm under the thick earcups.

Connection variant 1: The headphone is connected to the PC via a cordless USB receiver. This is recognized by Windows, which automatically installs the necessary drivers. Then you only have to switch on the headset, and the connection should be. A wireless connection without the USB receiver - for example via Bluetooth in the notebook - is not possible.

Whoever thinks that only the standard sound configuration of Windows is available is wrong. The amplifier built into the headset offers three sound profiles, which can be changed via an EQ key.

Connection variant 2: The USB receiver also has an optical audio input. If you have a sound card with optical digital output in the computer, this can connect here. Then you have to set the sound card itself and not the headset as a standard playback device under Windows. Here, depending on the soundcard model, further configuration possibilities for the sound result. The optical cabling with the USB receiver is actually for consoles. But be careful: Not every console has an optical digital output. Best example are the first Xbox 360 models or the latest PS4 Slim.

Connection variant 3: Whatever works, the wired connection is via jack plug. This mode is intended for use on smartphones or tablets. On the PC it makes sense, if the batteries of the LS30 should be empty (LucidSound gives 15 hours of battery time, which our Praxistest confirmed.) However, the supplied cable with 1.20 meters is not particularly long. The headset is in a passive mode via cable. You do not have to turn it on, but loses useful extras like the EQ switch. Also the controls for the playback and micro volume, which LucidSound cleverly integrated into the cover of the earpieces, are then without function.

Let's take a look at the microphone. The LS30 has a built-in microphone at the earpiece. This is intended for mobile use, but the sound quality is only moderate. However, an infectious microphone is also provided for use at home. This is the language quality much better, if not perfect. For normal game-chat it is more than easy.

In the hearing test, the LS30 is more than positive. The LS30's 50mm speakers deliver a balanced and transparent sound in the neutral EQ setting. For games, movies and music an EQ setting with rich bass can be selected. All in all, the sound is convincing, not only gamers can get their money's worth.

One thing for all: Gamers who are at home on the PC and console get a high-quality universal headset with the LucidSound LS30. It is also ideal for mobile use on smartphones or tablets. It also looks elegant, pleasant to the touch and provides a rich sound. What more do you want? The LucidSound LS30 fits almost everything perfectly.

Criticisms are the somewhat cumbersome cabling at the Microsoft consoles (Klinkenkabel must be additionally connected with the gamepad), but that is not much different with competitors products. The manufacturer offers a few helpful video tutorials for console players ready. Before the purchase, you should check whether your device has an optical digital output, otherwise the purchase of the LS30 makes no sense. "Besides the black model we tested with silver metal elements, a variant with white and gold is also available Br>
