Antivirus proves that an excellent protection against viruses does not have to be expensive. The free virus scanner protects your PC from viruses, Trojans, worms and other dangerous software. The anti-virus scanner runs permanently in the background and scans new files for potentially dangerous content. Avira Antivirus works with a combination of defenses: on the one hand the antivirus software regularly receives the latest “virus plug-ins” by online updating from the servers of the manufacturer. On the other hand, Antivirus tries to detect unknown pests by their behavior on the PC. Files are also checked online, via Avira’s so-called “cloud security technology.”
Apart from being a virus scanner, Avira Free Antivirus is also useful as a tracer blocker. It also protects you against companies that spying on your online activities. This requires the installation of a free antivirus browser extension, which is available for Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer and Opera. A practical feature for those who regularly try new programs is Avira's PUA protection. "PUA" stands for "potentially unwanted applications" and describes annoying additional programs that are more or less secretly installed. Avira Antivirus Pro, which also protects you against infected websites, online shopping and online banking, is available for just under 35 euros.
Virus scanning with Avira, once Avira has been installed, virus scanning almost takes place automatically. The first step is to click on the Avira icon in the taskbar. Then go to the red "Free Antivirus" icon. This opens the main window of the virus scanner.
