The Sony NEX-5R is the same as the previous model, the Sony NEX-5N (47.5 points in test). These include the 16.1 megapixel Exmor HD CMOS sensor in the APS-C- Format, a foldable display with touch function and videos in full-HD quality.
Handle and with new rotary wheel
New features are some of the features that Sony has introduced in higher-speed models, such as the improved Bionz processor, which is designed to more effectively suppress noise in high light sensitivity.
Functionality
Buying advice system cameras: The right mirrorless
Touch display with triggering function
For many more importantly, the new "fast-hybrid autofocus" is now to react more precisely and more quickly. On board is a WLAN module, which enables the wireless transfer of images to a PC, smartphone, TV or hot spots.
HD videos with long-term exposure
At the same time, Sony offers the possibility to expand the camera with applications from the company's platform individually. The Sony NEX-5R is currently priced at 650 euros, while the NEX-5N is still available at a lower price of 550 euros for the time being.
From the housing, the 5R is similar to the 5N. It is made of magnesium, has a high quality and straightforward modern design. Compared to other system cameras, the Kamerabody is extremely compact and narrow, so that the attached standard zoom is almost monstrous. But also with longer lenses, the comparatively large, rubberized handle imparts a secure holding feeling. There is no image stabilizer in the body, however, which must be in the lens.
On the lens bayonet fit lenses according to the E-mount standard. Together with the 5R and the standard zoom, Sony introduced a further three E-mount lenses that support the new hybrid focus: two zooms, a telephoto zoom 55-210 mm and a mega zoom 18-200 mm as well as a 24- Mm fixed focal length. In addition, the R5 is compatible with all Sony and Konica Minolta A-Mount lenses.
The new is purposefully upgraded in terms of operability: on the housing top, it has a new rotary wheel. This selects between the shooting modes (iA +, iA, P, A, S, M), the scene selection and the high-resolution 2D panning panorama. The wheel is not labeled, however, navigation and selection are displayed on the monitor. This is unusual, but works quite well and fast in practice.
Alternatively, there is the four-way switch on the camera rear for selecting the combined knurling wheel, which is also very useful for exposure control and zooming. Like the 5N, however, the 5R offers only a few direct accesses, instead a "Fn" button next to the trigger, so that the abundance of setting possibilities now opens up somewhat better than the predecessor.
The menu is clearly structured on the top level with small icons so that beginners can quickly find their way around. As soon as you enter the depths of the menu, you can lose yourself in the function set, especially since these are arranged in endless long riders. You can quickly jump to the last setting or jump to the beginning of the menu. With a little practice, it's even fun to play with the 5R and try out the various features.
Like the current SLT models and the more advanced NEXs, the 5R offers an automatic correction of edge shading, distortion and chromatic aberration. Also features such as DRO contrast optimization, HDR photos, noise-reduced "multi-frame NR" pictures with high ISO values or auto-portrait framing are possible. 11 Image effects with 15 variations and six customizable creative styles allow individual image variation during recording. Also useful is the peak function, which focuses on the sharply defined motif areas when focusing.
The photographer does not have to rely on a built-in flash and viewfinder for the 5R: Sony uses an electronic accessory that hides under a small flap on the top of the device. It can optionally be used to adapt both and other accessories. A small plug-in flash (LZ 7) is attached to the camera.
The image is controlled by a high-quality 3-inch display, which provides a decent picture quality with good fine-definition with 307,200 RGB pixels resolution. In order for the photographer to work flexibly, the monitor is equipped with a joint that allows tilting up to 180 degrees upwards and about 45 degrees downwards. If you hold the camera with the monitor up, you can see your face in the picture.
Autofokus: 19 images in series
As in the 5N, the monitor also functions as a touch screen, which can be operated intuitively with a little practice. What is new is that you can not only focus on the monitor but also trigger with a touch - a good idea. Those who prefer classic operation can switch off the touchscreen functionality and operate the camera using classic buttons and wheels.
A useful magnifying glass with 4.8x and 9.6x magnification is a useful aid in manual focusing. The image can also be used to display all recording information as well as an electronic water scale.
Better picture quality
Video recordings in the MP4 format (AVCHD) makes the 5R in Full-HD with stereo sound and continuous autofocus. The highest picture quality is available at 1080p with 50 full frames per second
Obviously, one benefits from the new autofocus system, which leads to hardly noticeable pumping in object tracking. What is new is that the 5R now offers a new automatic shutter delay. It lengthens the exposure time in poor light so that the shots are brighter than usual.
Well, the two new features of Wi-Fi and App capability are also pleasing. This allows photos to be transferred directly from the camera to a smartphone or other devices with WLAN support wireless. And the camera supports PlayMemories Camera Apps so that it can be enhanced with useful features, such as a remote control feature. Currently the offer of the App-Store is manageable and brings only small added value, but is to be extended constantly by offers.
Test Conclusion
Novel of the Sony cameras presented last summer is the double autofocus system, which is used both in the new SLT-A99 and the two NEX models: The "fast hybrid autofocus" works with a 25-field contrast AF And additionally a phase AF, which uses 99 fields directly on the image sensor. The phase AF is responsible for the detection of the direction during the focus and sends the AF motor of the lens to the approximately correct distance. Then the contrast-AF takes over and makes fine. Thanks to the double autofocus system, the 5R is designed to trigger more quickly and to adjust the sharpness more precisely.
With a triggering delay of 0.63 s and 0.6 s at 1000/30 lux, the 5R still performs well, but it is hardly better than the 5N (064 s / 0.7 s). The standard image speed is 9 B / s at full resolution. The 5N creates here with 10 B / s more, but only three images in series. The 5R succeeded 19 pictures in one piece. With a turn-on delay of 1.7 s, however, the 5R is comparatively slow, the 5N is already starting after 0.9 s.
Overall, the picture quality is about the level of the 5N. In terms of image resolution, the 5R from the 16-megapixel sensor brings as good a resolution of 1371 LP / BH at ISO 100 to 1068 LP / BH at ISO 12.800.
In the DL values is once the one times the other front, the 5R at ISO 100, 6400 and 12,800 with 1137/619/922 LP / BH versus 1014/505/386 LP / BH. For losses in the detailed drawing at higher sensitivities, the kurtosis values from 2.3 at ISO 1600 to a maximum of 4.7 at ISO 12.800.
Buying advice Sony system: The mirrorless NEX models
The new Bionz processor is to effectively suppress noise up to the high ISO levels. In fact, the camera develops little noise (0.5 to 1.6) over the entire sensitivity range, but compared to the 5N, the edge is rather marginal (0.6 to 1.8). The dynamic with values between 9.7 and 10.3 iris is very pleasing, with ISO 100/400 to 9.3 at ISO 1600. Even with ISO 6400 there are still 8.3 f-stops.
Sony offers the NEX-5R a further model in the mid-range segment of mirrorless NEX-Cameras, which scores in comparison to the NEX-5N with an improved operation and equipment with similar imaging performance. The concept with less manual and more automatic functions, a new rotary wheel and optional touchscreen function fits into this segment. Interesting especially in the future are the WLAN capability and the possibility to retrofit the camera with your own apps.
In terms of image performance, the 5R achieves good but barely better values than their 5N sister, and when focusing, it is not faster but makes more images in series. The new hybrid autofocus obviously benefits from the full-HD video mode, which is really fun with a precise, almost smooth, autofocus and a long-exposure option.
