PC fan quieter: tips and tricks

Your fan makes too much noise? Our tips will help you.


Tip 1: Set and check the values ​​for fans in the BIOS


A loud PC fan interferes with daily working and playing. In a media PC, he quickly ruins the movie pleasure in the living room. With a little tuning this does not have to be, and the PC is no longer a nuisance. This works with some settings in the system or by software. However, with special hardware for better cooling of the computer, the chances of success are higher.


Tip 2: Fan control


In most modern PCs, the values ​​for the maximum CPU temperature can be set and the processor fan can be relieved. The presettings for the CPTemperatures are set to a lower value for safety at the factory. Before you turn to processor and fan settings, search for the best settings from the manufacturer. These are specified depending on the type and the number of processor cores. With tools such as Pirifrom Speccy, you can determine the type of the processor and look for the defaults on the manufacturer's website.


Tip 3: Passive cooling and heat sink


Restart the computer and go to the BIOS. Depending on the BIOS manufacturer, you can find the settings for CPU Smart Fan Target under H / W Monitor or Hardware Monitor. Set the value here to the maximum temperature specified by the manufacturer. Then start Windows - the CPU fan should now turn less and be quieter.

You can control the fans in Windows by using the freeware SpeedFan. The free program tests the hardware of the computer and shows extensive information about the available components and fans. It determines the temperatures of processor, graphics card and hard disks. With a mouse click it is possible to control the speed of the fans. As a bonus, Smart Fan determines hard disk parameters using SMART technology. The software works on Windows 9x, 2000, XP, Vista, 7.8, 10 and server versions and is suitable for 32 and 64 bit.


Alternatively, you can build a controller for the fans in the PC. These devices can be used on the front side of the computer housing. They usually have the size of a DVD drive bay. The control is connected to the fans and from there it goes to the power supply. The temperature of the CPU, graphics card or hard disk from the control module is measured via the supplied sensors.


The integrated display provides real-time information about the current temperature of the individual components. The built-in controls control the speed of the fan. If the CPU is in a low temperature range, the controller brakes the fan. For high-performance applications such as video encoding, the load on the processor is higher. The fan must cool more and is switched on. Modern fan controls allow the control of at least four components.


As an alternative to a fan, there are passive cooling for processors. Here, a heat sink of metal is used to dissipate the heat instead of a fan to the CPU. So there is no noise. Such heat sinks are usually large and occupy a lot of space. The manufacturers are working on the miniaturization of the heat sinks, however, and offer smaller and more sophisticated models.


Passive cooling is not suitable for gaming and multimedia computers. These powerful applications require high processor performance, which causes high CPU temperatures. The passive heaters do not conduct the extreme heat properly, and there are disturbances up to the total damage. If you need a fan, you do not have to do without passive cooling. You can use a combination of fan and cooling block. The passive element relieves the fan, which does not have to work as much.


Cheap and noisy power supplies are used in cheap PCs. The main problem is the noisy fan. This can be exchanged against a whisper model, but loses the warranty during the change. A further handicap is too small slots for the air removal. They can be replaced by a grid. To do this, you must separate the ventilation slots from the housing with a small angle grinder.


An alternative is to replace the built-in power supply for a special model. Such quiet power supplies have a low-noise fan and have additional cooling elements integrated. They guide the resulting heat optimally. If you are building a PC yourself, you should invest a little more money right from the start. The special power supplies have a further advantage: They provide the necessary power for the PC components more stable, compared to cheap offers, which ensures safe operation.


When nearly 15 years ago, the first water-cooled PCs were shown, the effort was still very large. With pumps, water was circulated through a CPU cooler and the heat dissipated above it. The water cooled in large containers outside the computer. Meanwhile, the technology has evolved and water cooling is available to everyone.


Tip 5: Water Cooling


Current models with such cooling are small and have a sealed water circuit with radiator. The heat sink is placed on the processor, and the water circulates in the mini-circuit over the hoses. One or more fans provide cooling for the water and dissipate the heat to the outside. The manufacturers promise the customer maintenance-free operation.


If the laptop is hot, even though the small internal fans work on high-speed, notebook coolers help the computer. These integrated fans provide the notebook with fresh air and cooling from below.
