We test the Powerline adapter Zyxel PLA4211 (Starterkit). Even under ideal conditions, the adapter pair with conventional LAN ports only achieves a maximum net data rate of approximately 94 Mbit / s – with Gigabit ports would be a good 200 Mbps possible. But “ideal connections” in the domestic electricity network are anyway rather unrealistic. Even fast 500-adapters do not reach more than 100 Mbps net.
The power consumption of a “throttled” 500-adapter is significantly reduced: the PLA4211 is only 1.6 watts in operation. In silent mode, which starts 60 seconds after the Ethernet link is switched off, it is less than 0.5 watts. Too bad that the handbook on PDF is only in English and Zyxel does not provide telephone support. Also the enclosed configuration tool does not provide much help. Other manufacturers are doing much more.
