Canon EOS 7D / 50D

With its 18-megapixel CMOS it toppt the EOS 50D (15 megapixels) and also its direct competitor Nikon D300s (12 Megapixel), at least at the resolution. Compared to the sister model EOS 50D (770 Euro), the ergonomically rounded magnesium housing of the 7D is more effectively sealed against splashing water.

The pentaprism detector is larger in the 7D with an effective magnification of 0.63x (EOS 50D: 0.58x) and offers 100% image coverage (50D: 95%). However, search discs can only be changed with the 50D. A flash unit is installed on both cameras. Also, Live View with Phase and Contrast AF on the 3-inch monitor with 307,000 RGB pixels provide both a video mode (Full HD, 1920 x 1080) and AF support only the EOS 7D.

The 7D is also superior in the case of phase AF: 19 AF sensors (all cross sensors) compared to 9 AF sensors (1 cross sensor). The more favorable 50D with 0.26 / 0.28 s at 3000/30 lux has the nose in the case of the tripping delay including the AF time (7D: 0.33 / 0.44 s). New in the 7D is the exposure measurement system iFCL, which, in addition to brightness and object color, also takes into account the distance to the subject. The corresponding dual-layer sensor with a red- and blue-sensitive layer is also intended to increase the precision of the measurement.

The operating concept is unified. On the one hand, the classic data LCD on the upper side with assigned buttons, which in combination with one of the two rotary wheels allow the setting of relevant parameters. A new world opens up after pressing the Q button below the mode dial for the exposure programs.

Then the 3-inch TFT turns into a data monitor with different function fields, in which you can change values with the thumb wheel or change to the relevant sub-menu. Viewed from the higher maximum resolution, the EOS 7D is not superior to its more affordable sister in image quality. Both offer a dynamic range between 9 and 9.5 f-stops up to ISO 1600. The noise is low even with higher ISO settings, the texture loss is average.
