Canon EOS 650D in the test

The EOS 650D places Canon above the EOS 600D. The resolution of the sensor remains at 18 megapixels. New: The 3-inch monitor, adjustable as in the case of the 600D, is now designed as a touchscreen and thus extends the successful operating concept of the camera. Added to this is an improved live view autofocus.

Adjustable touch screen

With an entry price of about 780 euros, the new one will be located about 180 euros above the 600D, which will remain for the time being in the Canon system.

The dual AF system

The new top model of the Canon class with three-digit type designation has a properly processed, grip-resistant plastic housing with pleasing curves - typical Canon. The handle and the contact surface of the thumb are hand-coated and the case is just large or high enough to be easily held in the hand.

Live View and Video

Characteristic feature is the adjustable monitor with a high resolution of 346,700 RGB pixels. The monitor can be tilted to the left out of the case and rotated 270 degrees. This allows him to be seen in top view as well as from below in the case of overhead recordings, and self-portraits with visual inspection are also possible. In addition, the monitor is touch-enabled - more about this in the section on operation.

As usual, the optical viewfinder has a 95% image field coverage, 0.5x effective magnification and diopter adjustment (-3.0 to +1.0 dpr.).

One of the major improvements compared to the EOS 600D is the newly developed APS-C hybrid CMOS with dual AF system.

This means that, in addition to the 18 million pixels that the CMOS is used for image recording, there are further pixels in the middle area of the sensor (the number of which has not been known), with which a phase AF can be realized on the sensor, Which cooperates with the also existing contrast AF. This is to sharpen the focus with continuous autofocus with live view and especially with the film.

Guide: How modern AF drives work

Canon's promise of speed is particularly promising with the new STM lenses, a 40mm fixed focal length and an 18-135mm zoom.

In the case of the STM lenses, the manufacturer uses focusing motors, which differ significantly in their characteristics from ultrasonic motors: stepping motors do not achieve the same high end speed of USM motors, but start and brake much faster. And that is exactly what is required when the camera is to film the autofocus without jerks when filming.

The bottom line is that the STM lenses do this task faster and better than USM lenses, without taking pictures with an optical viewfinder and a conventional phase AF - as before, 9 measuring points including a cross sensor are located in the camera housing - to produce noticeable disadvantages >

In conjunction with the AF-test lens, an EF 2.8 / 24-70 mm, the shutter lag including the AF time is 0.31 / 0.49 s at 1000/30 lux, the 600D is at 0.29 / 0.3 s a tick faster. The 650D has significantly improved when focusing in the live view: 1.67 s versus 3.81 s - but this is not yet competitive.

Operating concept

With the 2.8 / 40mm STM, we also reach similarly disappointing values: 1.11s, 1.44s, and 179s in the Quick, Single and Multi modes. In addition, the 40mm STM works more quietly than a USM lens, but still pulls the sharpness jerky in the video mode.

A decent selection of exposure programs is obligatory for SLR cameras of the consumer class. In addition to the standard features such as full automatic, program, time, and aperture control, as well as manual time / aperture control, there is a selection of typical motif programs complemented by an HDR mode with three shots and "night shots without a tripod". In the last-mentioned mode, four exposures with a relatively short exposure time are recorded in a fast sequence and combined into one image.

For exposure measurement, the EOS 650D does not provide three methods, but four methods: Matrix, center-weighted, selective (spot size, approx. 9% of the field) and spot (not 4) Worth mentioning.

To activate the Live View function, a small button is located at the EOS to the right of the viewfinder. For automatic focusing in the live view, the Canon allows the user to choose between a phase AF with a dark phase (quick mode) - which one could now do without - and the dual AF, which can be set in three modes Br>

Image quality

Test Conclusion

Videos turns the EOS 650D in full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) with a maximum of 30 frames per second. The film mode has to be selected a little complicated by means of sliding switch, then to start with the Rec button (= live view button) the film. For some other cameras you start the movie from the live view mode, which is more practical.

Elementary film editing and single image storage from film sequences are on board. In order to improve the sound quality, the 650D allows the connection of an external microphone and the manual control. The recording level is displayed over the full width of the screen with 22 segments for the left and right channel, yellow segments indicate peak peaks

The EOS display impresses with particular clarity and clarity. This applies, on the one hand, to the menu structure with 11 horizontally arranged card readers and a maximum of 7 entries per page, which can be read without scrolling. The function fields of the Quick-Info-Monitor can be used to change settings directly by means of the rotary knob or to call up the relevant sub-menu.

A wide range of controls allow you to control many of the keystrokes, such as ISO setting, white balance, autofocus mode, picture mode, and mode (single and continuous, self-timer, remote control). The buttons of the 4-way switch are also assigned functions in the recording mode.

A new addition to the EOS 650D is the touchability of the monitor. With the finger you can operate both in the menus and the Quick-Info-Monitor, which makes some operation even faster. However, if you do not like monitors that are smeared with wet fingers, you can do everything with the keys, 4-way switch, and the existing rotary knob.

The touchscreen is, however, practically practical when it comes to choosing an AF point on the monitor with a finger. If "Touch-trigger" is activated in the menu, the camera will immediately go off after the focus.

As far as image quality is concerned, it is worth comparing with the more affordable EOS 600D. The 600D scores slightly better for the most commonly used low and medium sensitivities: the 650D scores with higher DeadLeaves values, however, in the case of kurtosis, the measure for a detailed signal processing.

A closer look at the DL curves also shows that Canon with the 650D the contrast is significantly higher, giving the images a too touchy touch and also pushes the dots. Practically the same for the noise with VN values between 0.6 to 2.3 / 2.4 and with the dynamic with 7 to 9 diaphragms in the range from ISO 100 to ISO 6400. Winner after points is the EOS 600D especially with ISO 100/400, the EOS 650D at ISO 3200/6400.

Already the Canon EOS 600D belonged with its adjustable monitor, comprehensive functionality and coherent operating concept to the best what one gets in the Aufsteigerklasse of the SLR cameras. Now, the Canon EOS 650D adds a touch-enabled monitor for an additional cost of around 180 euros - and the new dual AF system with live-view and video benefits.

However, with the image quality, the less aggressively tuned 600D has the nose ahead. If you are filming, you can use the cheaper sister model without hesitation and save the saved money on lenses.
