Tablet test: Kindle Fire HDX vs. Nexus 7 in comparison

We tested the tablets Google Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HDX and compared these cheap devices in a comparison.

Amazon Kindle Fire HDX: Higher resolution but no camera

Google Nexus 7 or Kindle Fire HDX? We have both HD tablets in comparison. Which tab is the race? Google has shattered the tablet world with the original Nexus 7: Such a powerful 7-inch tablet for so little money there was nowhere else. The new Nexus 7 is said to repeat this trick: The tablet, which continues to be manufactured by Asus, offers a full-HD display and a quad-core processor for 230 euros. However, now with the Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 7 a competitor is dipping, with which one gets it also everything - and with the 214 euro is currently even cheaper.

Nexus 7 with weaker processor

If you are looking for advertising in the lockscreen, the tablet gets even for 199 euros. Both the Nexus 7 and the Kindle Fire HDX are equipped with 16 GB flash memory and WLAN and Bluetooth for wireless communication. The memory can not be expanded with either of the two tablets using a MicroSD card. If you need more storage space, you'll have to go to a more expensive version of the tablets with 32 GB of Flash.

Kindle Fire: Android without Google

Amazon has equipped the Kindle Fire HD 7 with a 7 inch display, the resolution of 1920 x 1200 is even a bit higher than the 1920 x 1080 of the Nexus 7. The IPS panel of the Kindle offers just like the Nexus 7 A very good quality, a negative effect caused by the blue LEDs of the background lighting is not noticed at the Amazon Tablet. The maximum brightness is slightly higher for the Nexus 7, but it is so high on both devices that you can still see something on the screen despite the mirrored outdoor displays.

Also interesting is

With its 16: 10 display, the Kindle Fire HDX with 18.6 centimeters is slightly narrower than the 20 centimeter wide Nexus 7, but it is slightly higher with 12.8 centimeters. The Kindle Fire is designed from the chassis design rather to be held transversely, the Nexus 7 is rather optimized for the high format. Thus, the front camera sits at the middle of the Kindle in one of the longitudinal sides of the display frame, while the Nexus on the Schmalseite.

Google has the new edition of the Nexus 7 now also a rear camera with 5 MP pixels donated, which is sufficient for snapshots, in the Kindle one needs with the front camera. There is a micro-USB port, a headphone jack, and nothing else in the interfaces between the two tablets.

The fastest ARM processor from Qualcomm comes with the Snapdragon 800, the fastest ARM processor in the stable plastic case of the Amazon tablet - it weighs 300 grams a bit heavier than the similarly warp-resistant Nexus 7 with 290 grams. It has four Krait 400 cores with a clock frequency of up to 2.2 GHz and an integrated Adreno 330 GPU. In the Nexus 7, the Snapdragon S4 Pro has a Qualcomm Quad-Core CPU of the old generation.

It clocks at 1.5 GHz and contains as a GPU the Adreno 320. The more modern graphics unit of the Kindle Fire HDX makes itself clearly in the 3D benchmark. In the Ice Storm Unlimited run of the Futuremark 3DMark, the Fire HDX comes at a very good 16642 points, the Nexus 7 with 10487 meters clearly behind. In the Browserbenchmark Peacekeeper, the Kindle also took the lead with 571 points at 881.

The Google Tablet with 5:38 hours in the Peacekeeper offers a slightly better runtime than the Kindle, whose battery strikes the sails after 5 hours and 20 minutes. In practice, with the Nexus surfing with WLAN is about 10 hours without power supply, the Kindle about one hour less.

Amazon uses an operating system called FireOS 3.0 on the Kindle Fire HDX, which is based on Android 4.2.2. The programmers at Amazon have made use of the fact that Android is an open-source operating system on Linux, FireOS is thus a fork of Android, which must also be maintained by Amazon. As a result, FireOS does not have a Google license or access to all non-source Google services and apps.

All other Android apps run without problems on the Kindle Fire, as long as they are available in the Appstore of Amazon. The Google Play Store is also not available on the Amazon tablet. This is also in the inventor's mind, after all, the users of the Kindle FireHDX should use Amazon's own services and buy music, videos, apps and e-books on Amazon and not on Google. The selection of apps is significantly smaller at around 100,000, compared to the Google Nexus 7, while Google Play includes about one million apps, but the most important programs are also available at the Amazon store.

Instead of Google Drive, there is an Amazon cloud store at the Kindle Fire, which offers as much space with free 5 GB as well. FireOS 3.0 is also different from the start screen of Google's Android: Instead of the usual icons collection on several screens, there is a kind of coverflow view for the most important apps, a menu bar over it allows quick access to documents, photos, Stores. Amazons Silk is used as a web browser. He uses a cloud service to upload content and send it to the tablet. Other browsers can not be installed on the Kindle Fire HDX.

Amazon has also integrated a free-time operating system that allows parents to create their own profiles for their children. In these, only the apps, games and books are available, which are also released by the parents accordingly. In addition, it is also possible to set time limits in which, for example, only learning games are accessible and entertainment and games are blocked.

Nexus 7: Always Up-to-Date

With the Nexus 7 you get Android pure, of course with all Google apps and services preinstalled. During the test, the update was already available on Android 4.4.2 "KitKat". On Android 4.4, Google optically adapted the e-mail client to the GMail app and eliminated the disturbing navigation bar, e-books and videos. A not unimportant advantage of the Google tablet is also that you get new Android versions and updates earlier than other manufacturers, guaranteed for 18 months. With the Kindle Fire HDX you have to wait for the Amazon programmers to adopt new Android functions in FireOS, which takes much longer.

The better hardware you get with the Kindle Fire HDX, with its Snapdragon 800 it is significantly faster than the Google Nexus 7 and also a bit cheaper. He lacks only the back camera of the Google tablet. However, you must get involved with the Amazon tablet without having to go through the Google App Store and Google Services apps. Amazon is also lagging behind with the updates for the operating system, because on the Kindle Fire HDX, instead of Google's Android, an Amazon version of Android is used.
