Samsung MultiXpress C8640ND and C8650ND: test, buy, service

Test report: We have looked at the new MultiXpress C8640ND and C8650ND from Samsung, which scan at a breathtaking speed of up to 70 ipm (images per minute). This is possible by a real duplex scanner (a duplicate scanning unit), the front and the back of the document.

To ensure that the data is not collected at the high acquisition rate, Samsung uses a special compression method called MRC (Mixed Raster Content). The result is impressive. For example, while the original size is 25,635 KB, the corresponding JPEG would have a size of 6923 KBytes. As an MRC it is only 443 KB.

Of course, the data shrinkage is negligible. A dual-core processor with a clock frequency of one gigahertz makes neat steam under the hood. The highlight: All control units are only placed on a single board. This saves space and energy.

Fast printing unit

Of course, the Samsung multifunctional devices can not only scan quickly, but also quickly print. Samsung has set the speed up to 48 pages per minute for the MultiXpress C8650ND (DIN A4 in color and black and white). The "small" Brother C8640ND is up to 38 pages per minute.

But the highest pressure and scantempo does not matter if there is always paper jam. That is why Samsung has reworked and improved the system and the dimension of the pinch and feed rollers.

The operation of the MFPs via the large and colored touch screen is very easy. If you want, you can also use the wipe effect known from smartphones and tablets. If a function is not self-explanatory, SmartScan finds the answer quickly.

The new, second generation of polymarkers requires a lower fixation temperature. This results in two things: the Fuser is faster to operating temperature, good for the FPO time (First Page Out), and the Fuser needs less energy.

Less consumption

The TEC (Typical Electric Consumption) is reduced by up to 42 percent according to the manufacturer, thanks to the all-in-one board solution, the Instant Fuser and the Polymertoner. The Eco function, which is simply activated by the touch of the button on the device, makes the paper more useful by using duplex, blank pages, and two or four pages printed on one sheet

The open XOA platform enables retailers to develop applications and thus precisely adapt the MFPs to the needs of their customers. Thanks to the many additional Samsung solutions, such as SyncThru (Device Management), SecuThru (Secure Printing), SmarThru (Workflow Document Distribution), the MFPs of the MultiXpress series are very well integrated and manageable. Both devices will be available in January 2013.
