Amazon: Higher prices for Apple users are "Schmarrn"

In an interview with the Rheinische Post, Ralf Kleber, head of Amazon the United States, said, among other things, the allegations that the company would display a different price to customers depending on the user device. The reason for this was a test of the TV broadcast “Marktcheck” of the Südwestrundfunk (SWR), according to which owners of Apple devices may have to pay a higher price for Amazon products than other users. In the case of a washing machine on a iPad was shown a price 10 euros higher than on a PC. According to Kleber, this is “absolute rubbish.”

However, what adhesives confirmed were often changing prices - but these are valid for all users of Amazon: "If we feel that the customer is developing a new market price, and that can be with some products several times a day, we react to it . Prices go up and down - but we tell the customer. And all at the same time. What is not there is different prices for the same product on different end devices. "According to SWR, the price of a camera changed within three days about 275 times, in the case of another camera the price changed in the same Period by almost 1,000 euros.

If the utterances of glue correspond to the reality, it would remain to clarify how the SWR could show a different price for the mentioned washing machine. Price adjustments that were not displayed on one of the devices used, for example, due to settings for the caching of online content (browser cache), are conceivable. However, this is now difficult to find.

The SWR reported not only according to access device supposed price differences at Amazon and frequent fluctuations of same also over influences of the surfing behavior. However, they concerned other online retailers. Specifically, it was about the provider "lensbest", which when viewing the web site different prices than when the user comes through a search engine ad on the product page. We could indeed reproduce this behavior. As mentioned in the previous article on pc-magazin.de, this approach (dynamic pricing) is, however, completely legal. Customers only need to be aware of this.
