Lenovo CEO Yang Yuanqing gave the American Press Agency (dpa) an interview at the CES 2017, criticizing Microsoft for the Windows 10 update policy. The free update from Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 did not help the PC market and instead caused a disappointment for users who have caused problems.
The journalist of the dpa first asked if Windows 10 could provide impulses on the PC market. Yuanqing pointed to figures from the PC sector, according to which Windows 10 could not provide a revival. According to data from Gartner market observers, the figures for worldwide sales of PCs in October 2017 fell by 7.7 percent. At this time, Windows was already on the market for just over two months.
According to the Lenovo CEO, Microsoft should have deployed Windows 10 with new devices. If these were optimally tuned to Windows 10, the users would have been able to make a rather satisfactory experience with the new operating system. If you install the system instead on older computers, problems with Windows 10 often occur - due to non-functioning hardware or software. At Lenovo, complaints were received from customers in the course of the release of Windows 10.
Yuanqing goes so far as to say that Microsoft Windows 10 should not have offered free. Apart from disappointed customers because of problems with the new operating system, the free update would not have helped the entire industry. Finally, most users were able to use their old computers instead of investing in new hardware.

Lenovo wants to continue to be profitable with the sale of computers. A clearer PC market will be helpful, as manufacturers such as Sony, for example, have advanced, and a simultaneous focus on other markets. Yuanqing points to convertibles, which are interesting for both notebook and tablet users. Moreover, Lenovo is no longer a pure PC manufacturer more. Smartphones, servers and storage systems are other fields that the company can grow.
