Windows 10: Turn off Cortana - no web search by wizard

Before the weekend Microsoft worried. After the Anniversary Update, Cortana will take over the classic search in Windows 10. Search requests for content on the computer would also be directed to the Internet, or more specifically to Bing, to display additional web results. The switch to disable this feature will disappear with the update, which is expected from August 2nd.

Specifically, Microsoft just hides the function. With a trick, you can still disable Cortana for the web search. You must, however, work in the registration editor. Alternatively, use one of the attached files, which you will find in the download at the end of this message. It is a zip archive with two ".reg" files. You only need one. You run it and restart your computer. Your search queries will not be sent to Bing.

If you want to make the changes to the registry manually, start the registration editor by clicking on the start button and the entry "regedit". Keep in mind that you need administrator rights to make changes to the registry. You can now disable Cortana generally for the entire computer, or only for the active user.

If you change all users, navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Policies \ Microsoft \ Windows \ key, right-click the Windows key on the left and create a new key with the name "Windows Search". In this case, you create a DWORD value and give it the name "AllowCortana" and the value 0. If you want to make the change for only one account, first select "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" instead of "HKEY_CURRENT_USER". Faster is the download. If necessary, restart your computer.
