The notebook Medion Akoya E4214 (MD 99570) stands since 25 June at Aldi South. What do testers say on the Specs? For 279 euros you get a 14-inch notebook with simple equipment, the technical data correspond to the reasonable price. Nevertheless, there are positive surprises with the full-HD display and the “HDD Bay” from Medion. All in all, the new Aldi laptop is a bargain – but only for the discriminating user.
Not bad at all
The Medion Akoya E4214 (MD 99570) is built on the entry-level SOC (system-on-a-chip, one-chip system) Intel Pentium N3540 with integrated graphics and 2 GB of memory. In addition, a conventional 500 GB magnetic disk is used. Windows 8.1 is installed as an operating system, which you can upgrade to Windows 10 free of charge from July 29th within one year. The technical equipment is sufficient for simple Internet applications such as browsing, e-mail checking and for office. If it becomes more demanding, the performance decreases significantly.
Due to the limited computing power of the Medion Akoya E4214 (MD 99570), image or video editing is not recommended, but the price of 279 euros is however painful. The 14-inch display with full-HD resolution is a big plus. The laptop provides enough power to watch 1080p video in full resolution. This means you are also mobile and under sun light not so fast out of action: The display is anti-reflective and the battery should keep according to Medion 4.5 hours. In normal use, this should be in practice at least three hours per charge. Dimensions of 342 by 29 by 242 millimeters at 1.69 kilograms are still acceptable for a 14 inch device.
The Medion Akoya E4214 (MD 99570) does not offer a removable disk drive (CD, DVD or Blu-Ray), but in addition to a card reader, the "HDD Bay" from Medion. On the side you can insert a 2.5-inch drive (with a maximum thickness of 7 millimeters), thus expanding the memory space. An SSD is also easy to use. In addition, a webcam including a microphone is also installed for online communication.
The Medion Akoya E4214 (MD 99570) offers all current standards. USB 3.0 is also on board as WLAN-n, Gigabit-LAN and an HDMI output. Windows 8.1 comes with software, which you can upgrade to Windows 10 free of charge at the end of July. There is also a 30-day trial of Office 365.
Tip: Aldi Nord sells the stronger, but also more expensive Medion Akoya E7416 (MD 99585) likewise since 25 June. Limited mobility with significantly more performance could be more appealing to some notebook buyers looking for a desktop replacement for the home.
