D-Link: WLAN router with WPS security gap

Owners of many WLAN routers from D-Link should switch off the WPS function. As hardware experts have discovered, the WPS algorithm of many D-Link devices has errors that make it easy to find the pin for access to a wireless network. The pin is only created on the basis of the MAC address of the WLAN router, and this MAC address is obtained by intercepting and reading out a single data packet.

WPS is usually used to add Wi-Fi enabled devices to an existing wireless network without complicated configuration. The WPS function is activated on both devices, usually a short pin is interrogated. Afterwards, the new device is shared in the WLAN and can access files on the network and go online via the connected Internet connection.

Authors of the devttys0.com website have been hit and have published a list of devices affected by the WPS error. So far, 22 devices with the weak point are confirmed. For 16 devices it can be confirmed that they do not have the security gap in the WPS algorithm. See the linked website for more information about the current problem with D-Link wireless routers.

Users currently only have to disable the WPS feature. D-Link is aware of the problem, but there is no update at this time.
