Is the Medion P7648 as a gaming laptop or more than a powerful work machine?
The new Aldi laptop Medion P7648 has its advantages: a processor of the new Intel Kaby-Lake generation, a Geforce GTX 950M as graphics chip, 16 GB of RAM, a 256 GB SSD and a 1 TB hard drive. The price tag of 899 euros seems steep, is for a 17-inch notebook (full-HD resolution) with these data but Medion-typically not too much. Fits the configuration and is worth buying? That's what we'll tell you in the bargain test.
The Medion P7648 provides an Intel Core i7-7500U processor. It is currently the most powerful ultra-low-voltage processor (15 watt loss) from the new Kaby-Lake processor series from Intel - the Skylake successor. While desktop CPUs are still waiting, Intel has expanded its portfolio of Kaby Lake chips for mobile use a few weeks ago. The 7500U employs two cores with hyperthreading, so it can handle four tasks with 2.7 to 3.5 GHz (turbo) at the same time. The processor is very strong for laptops, and at the same time energy-saving.
The Nvidia Geforce GTX 950M of the Medion P7648 promises a good game performance. The chip settles in the middle class. Due to the older Maxwell architecture and now somewhat limited 4 GB VRAM are not all current games on the highest details. If you can make a compromise on the settings and the timeliness of games, however, the CPU and the graphics chip get a playable base.
For sufficient endurance of the Medion P7648 also provide 16 GB RAM in the current-saving DDR3L standard. The Intel processor actually supports DDR4 RAM. Probably, Medion has opted for the more energy-efficient graphics chip and display for the more economical RAM. A difference is noticed by most users, but we can not really understand the decision. Because mobile is a 17.3-inch notebook with full-HD display and dedicated GPU anyway not. The battery life is indicated by "up to" 4 hours. Realistic should be around two and a half with active desktop use. The use as a desktop replacement with a constant current supply via power supply seems to be more useful for us, especially if you often want to get the power out of CPU and graphics chip.
We see the Medion P7648 less than games - because more than a potent working PC. Windows 10 Home on a 256 GB SSD is a novelty for Medion notebooks. The SSD provides enough space for Windows, large software suites and one or the other game. Data is stored on a large 1-TB hard drive. DVD burner, webcam and card reader complete the good picture as an all-rounder. USB 3.1 Type C ensures future-proof security, and the laptop communicates via Gigabit LAN or WLAN-AC for constant satisfaction during working and surfing. The most important thing is on board. Light criticism we would have at most at the RAM, Filmfreunde could still disturb a missing Blu-ray drive with burning function. Otherwise, Aldi has a good notebook on offer.
