We test e-book readers from Kindle Paperwhite via Sony Reader PRS-T2 to TrekStor and more. The five-year-old Kindle was not the first reader with electronic ink. But Amazon made a small revolution with a simple operation, the price and the e-book selection. His name makes Amazon’s e-book reader definitely worth the honor: “kindle” means in English as much as “a fire ignite”. And this is what the rather inconspicuous electronic reader has achieved.

Already two years ago, Amazon sold in the US more e-books than pocket books. And according to a study by the American Association of American Publishers, in the US, sales in the e-books were higher in the first quarter of this year than in printed books.

Sales in electronic books have also risen significantly in the German-speaking countries. According to Bitkom, the turnover of e-book readers in the United States rose by 163 percent to 78 million euros. And the book wholesaler Libri announced last October that it had sold more e-books than printed books.
In the United States, for example, more and more bookbills are reaching for the electronic book and opting for an e-ink device - and for a good reason. E-book readers are not only cheaper compared to a tablet PC - TrekStors reader costs just 75 euros -, they are also considerably lighter. They weigh less than 200 grams and are therefore lighter than most pocketbooks. Moreover, they are particularly economical. The batteries usually last several weeks. And this is true even in the new generation of devices with illuminated displays.
No question: With the first e-book reader, every bibliomana bury the hair. For much of what is usually a reading experience must be thrown overboard. A completely new reading sensation comes in, but this has its positive sides: The readers are super-light, easy to use and thanks to WLAN quickly equipped with new reading equipment. And if you use a device with a reading lamp, you can also read it under the blanket.
