To encrypt files and directories, TrueCrypt creates virtual disks. These work like a normal removable disk drive. When saving, TrueCrypt automatically encrypts the data in this container file. When it is read, it decrypts it again. If you want to make sure that sensitive data does not get into the wrong hands, you need to encrypt the data. Vista offers the data carrier cipher Bitlocker, which however only with a special hardware chip functions. TrueCrypt is an excellent utility for encrypting data and makes Bitlocker superfluous.
TrueCrypt knows two ways to deal with encrypted data: the entire partition is encrypted, which in turn means that the partition is reformatted, and on the other hand, TrueCrypt is always active in the background when this partition is accessed. Alternatively, on the basis of a container file, TrueCrypt creates one or more virtual disks with its own drive letter, which you use in a disk drive to store and load files in each application program. You will then be given access to the drive after entering your password.
Good: You do not need to memorize a code word any more, because as a keyfile, TrueCrypt also allows files stored on CD, DVD or USB memory, such as a digital photo. Within this container, TrueCrypt manages a file system. These containers are particularly suitable for creating a private encrypted area for sensitive data on an otherwise non-encrypted partition. To read and write, TrueCrypt mounts this file. On Windows, a new virtual disk is created. By accessing the attached file, the user gains access to the unencrypted data and can encrypt it by simply copying the TrueCrypt drive.
Care must be taken when storing backups, especially on CD / DVD, as corruption of the volume header area (the first 1024 bytes) means that the container can no longer be mounted. Truecrypt therefore provides a function for backing up and restoring the header data area. Single defective sectors only cause the corresponding assignment units to be read in the contained file system.
When saving, TrueCrypt automatically encrypts your data, decryption is done immediately when the file is opened. On the hard drive, all data are always encrypted. In addition, entire partitions and USB sticks can also be encrypted with a key which is up to 448 bits long. TrueCrypt can also store the container files with the encrypted data on USB sticks
