The Arcam AV888

Arcam receivers regularly teach the competition the fear. With the AV888, the British also play an important role in the AV preamplifiers. The simple beauties perfectly fit the stereo and surround perfectly and can be used as a model.

Brit for Fun

The bad news ahead: The Arcam AV888 is not yet equipped for 3D images and other HDMI 1.4 finesse. However, it is still worthwhile for everyone, because this processor pre-amp is one of the finest that can be found in the multi-channel range.

The promise to offer high-end sound in this class is full, and the sophisticated operation is the biggest surprise ever. Its on-screen menus are logical, intuitive and responsive, and the connectors on the back are clearly organized and well-marked.

The AV888 is easy to set up especially for this performance class even in manual basic setup. And anyone who understands their processor better can also make the most of their potential.

Finally, the Arcam allows you to tailor the inputs to the respective sources: peg-leveling through Dolby Volume and even individual bass and treble control can be stored for each connected device.

For video sources, you can program essential image parameters such as brightness, contrast, gamma, edge enhancement, and three different noise reductions, besides the sound delay, without looking into the operating instructions.

There is only room for improvement on the front panel: the tiny, fumble buttons for volume and scrolling through the inputs are more suited to styling than to comfort. But the front display is top: it informs with its fine matrix from far over source, sound mode and volume level.

The equipment does not contain any gimmicks, but is comprehensive: five HDMI inputs and two outputs, a lot of inputs and outputs for digital audio components and even for video plus S-video, which most manufacturers now save. In addition, Phono MM and Internet radio as well as bidirectional control over RS-232 for installations come

This is complemented by a sound which perfectly matches the requirements of audiophiles and cinema freaks. Supported by elaborate D / AWandlers of the type Wolfson WM8741, its audio section conjured a performance that makes addictive. Delicate, yet detailed, open and precise, the Arcam rewrote the performance, supported by crisp, deep basses.

Even in stereo, the Brit sounded remarkably three-dimensional and excelled with excellent imaging precision. It was as if the musicians were free in the room. His very natural vocal reproduction also paid off in surround, where he produced a huge contiguous space. The outsider guarantees goosebumps.
